My wife and I met John for the first time when he called us during a return trip from Utah and asked if he could stop and visit. He had read my book, Harvesting Urban Timber, and wanted to meet me and discuss what he was starting in Pittsburgh. We visited him at his workshop this past March and were very impressed with his own wood artistry. All the years I have been involved in urban tree utilization led me to think in terms of lumber and boards. I learned from John and the wonderful pieces he made from limbs and other parts (that I would have discarded) to look with an artistic eye at the totality of the tree and what it can yield in its next life.
Following the example of the trees he revered, John was firmly rooted in the earth but was always reaching for the sky.
Our heartfelt condolences to his daughter, his family, his many friends and artistic colleagues.

John,
We really miss you, buddy. You're the best brother in-law I ever had. I can't used to you being gone, but we, all the Metzlers and the rest of your family & friends (you sure have a LOT of them, John!) will take good care of Chelsie - don't worry about that. One day I'll see you again, and then we'll laugh hard. Love,
Joe & Jeannie Veedock, Raleigh, NC

John, I remember you took me for a motorcycle ride when we were teenagers and I lost your helmet and you were so forgiving. I'll never forget your smiling face. My brother Mike Patton was going to your viewing the day he passed away, I know you two are up in heaven watching over us.

John you were a small one the last time I seen you. The love and thoughtful caring you learned then obviously was shared with everyone you came in contact with as you grew to be a Man. God Bless You and your Family. Always remembered

I was so shocked and saddened to learn of the senseless death of John Metzler. I had the pleasure of meeting John through his contacts with Friends of the Pittsburgh Urban Forest and the City Forester's office, and enjoyed a lively tour of his operation in January. He truly championed the beauty and benefits of trees, and was a passionate supporter of Pittsburgh's urban forest.
Last week at a meeting of the state urban forestry coordinators from the 20 notheast states, I distributed small mementos that John made using sycamore wood from Pittsburgh trees. They are all the more dear now. I am so very sorry for John's family and many friends who loved him, and hope you find some comfort in the knowledge that so many share in your sadness. Sincerely, Ellen Roane, PA DCNR Bureau of Forestry, Urban Forestry Coordinator

My sincere condolences to John's family and all who knew/loved him. I talked with John only once when I met him and Randie Snow at the Everday Objects/Everday Places Exhibit at Sirani Gallery in Nov. 2008 as one of the participating artists. His passion as an artist was seen in his profoundly beautiful work and in his presence as one in love with life. He left a lasting impression.+

To the Metzler family,
My sincere condolences. I just recently ran into John. We talked about the old neigborhood ( Home Avenue ) and he spoke with such enthusiasm about his new business venture. We exchanged a handshake and a smile as we parted. It was so good to see someone from the old neighborhood. May God bless John and his entire family.

We were shocked & deeply saddened to learn of John's passing. Although we haven't been close in recent years, we knew John best when he was transitioning from construction to artistry - what a transition he made! The courage to take a huge risk & do what he loved is profound. Always a kind heart. His smile, his laugh, his easy going way, his energy, his sensitivity & sincerity, his love of & loyalty to friends & family, especially Chelsie Mae. We hope his dream will go on through the people he touched. He was a wonderful man & we're better for having known him.

May you rest in peace and may your family find peace in the knowledge that you will live on in the memories of all that you have touched and the beautiful art that you have created.

John,
That smile on your face and in your eyes when you turn your head at that angle. That laugh! Always there to offer hugs to family, friends, and strangers when we need them. Remember the attic, the hat, and your dad? How about the conversation with hotel security when Jesse accidently got locked in the bathroom on the morning of the wedding (we all have these stories)? To say that you have a zeal for life does not approach your passion for it. These are the things that we must remember when thinking of you.
