JOSEPH A.
JOSEPH A. "TUBBY" ALTOMARI, 76, of Scottdale (formerly of Belle Vernon), passed away at 11:35 p.m., Sunday, January 25, 2004 in Westmoreland Regional hospital, Greensburg. Joe was born March 30, 1927 in Lorraine, OH; a son of the late Ralph and Angelina Caruso Altomari. He married the former Lena M. Giacomantonio on November 15, 1952. Joe was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He resided in Belle Vernon with his wife from 1956-1998, prior to locating in Scottdale. He retired in 1986 after working 40 years as a millwright with Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel, Monessen. He was a member of St. John The Baptist Roman Catholic Church, Scottdale and the Knight's of Columbus, Council 954, Monessen. He served in the St. Sebastian Church Choir, Belle Vernon and was a member of the Mon Valley Chordsman Chapter of S.P.E.B.S.Q.A., American Italian Heritage Assoc., Marquette Club of Monessen, American Legion Post #0659 of Belle Vernon, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post in Monessen. A veteran of WWII, Joe served as a Private First Class in the US Army's 7th Field Battalion. He was stationed in the European Theatre, participated in the Normandy Invasion and was awarded the WWII Victory Metal, Army of Occupational Medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal. He also graduated from Monessen High School and enjoyed traveling, gardening, woodworking, golfing, and fishing. Joe will be sadly missed by his loving family; his wife of 51 years, Lena M. Giacomantonio Altomari; his daughter, Roxanne M. Markle and husband Dr. Howard Markle of Scottdale; his son, Kevin J. Altomari and wife Dawn Gideon of Pittsburgh; a granddaughter, Tessa Markle; two sisters, Elizabeth Codispoti of Detroit, MI and Marie Altomari of Monessen; two brothers, Alfred Altomari and wife Stella of Lorraine, OH and Eugene Altomari and wife Rita of Monessen; numerous nieces and nephews; and a close friend, Harry Jarouse of Belle Vernon. IN addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Adeline "Tootsie" Altomari and four brothers, Ernest, Angelo, James and Frank Altomari. Family and friends will be received on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the FERGUSON FUNERAL HOME, 105 Spring Street, Scottdale (724-887-5300/e-mail fergfh@alusa.net) where a Prayer Service will be held on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m., in St. John The Baptist RC Church, Scottdale with Rev. Father Jacques DePaul Delay O.S.B. and Rev. Father Leonard W. Stoviak co-celebrating. Chapel committal and entombment will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Monongahela with full military honors.
