Obituary Condolences

Age 89, of Upper St. Clair, peacefully with his wife and four daughters by his side, on Saturday, June 9, 2018. Dick will be most remembered for his strong devotion to family, his generosity and his tireless efforts for charitable and community causes. He was a life long student of religious thought, philosophy and science. The truth he lived by was to "Live in harmony with the universe". He was a visionary and a deep thinker and instrumental in numerous causes, including United Cerebral Palsy of Southwestern PA, Child's Way, Washington, PA Public Library and Canonsburg Hospital. He initiated the Basic Issues Forum in conjunction with the Philosophy Department at Washington and Jefferson College, where he also served on the board. Over several decades, he wove together all of his philosophical beliefs and scientific knowledge to write a book, entitled No Sign in the Sky. In his final decades, Dick envisioned building a public observatory for southwestern PA, to promote interest in science and astronomy. Partnering with the Amateur Astronomy Association of Pittsburgh, an observatory housing one of the most powerful telescopes for public use was built in Mingo Creek Park. Hundreds of viewers, both children and adults come to view the night sky each month for education and enjoyment. This was one of the most important achievements to him and a dream come true. Dick was born in Shreveport, Louisiana and received degrees in geology and geophysics. He studied further while serving in the army in Berlin during the Korean War. Eventually he founded Haddad & Brooks, Inc., an independent oil and gas exploration company in southwestern Pa., which he successfully ran for over forty years. Dick was married to his treasured wife Susan, for sixty rewarding years. They raised four daughters in Upper St. Clair, PA.  Loving father of Julie (Mike) Young, Betsy (Isam) Haddad, Sarah (Tim) Hicks and Katie (Chris) Flynn; cherished and active Bops of Haley (Clark), Katie, Victoria (Jonathon), Will (Jen), Caitlyn (Mark), Claire, Olivia, Jennifer, Aden, Keaton, Tucker, Lola and Ronan; cherished great-grandfather of Emory, Mason, Turner, Ben and Charlotte; dear son of the late George and Rosalie (Yazbeck) Haddad. Funeral arrangements by BEINHAUERS. Family and friends welcome Wednesday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at 2828 Washington Rd., McMurray, 724-941-3211. A celebration of life service will be celebrated in the courtyard of Westminster Presbyterian Church on Thursday at 11 a.m. Inurnment Private.
