McCOMBIE ROBERT LAWRENCE "BOB"
Died September 30, 2007, in Norfolk, Virginia after a long illness. He was born October 18, 1927 in Spangler, Pennsylvania to Howard and Mabel McCombie. He joined the U.S. Navy and was a pilot in the WWII-era "Flying Midshipmen." In 1952, he married Mary Eleanor Bruce of Portsmouth, Virginia, and later that year moved to Colorado to complete a degree in engineering at the University of Denver. McCombie continued in the U.S. Naval Reserves for 23 years, specializing in airborne anti-submarine combat, and retired at the rank of Commander. He worked for the Du Pont companies in Wilmington, Delaware, where he collaborated on the creation of new plastics for use in aircraft and industry; he held several patents from his work. In 1960, the McCombie family moved to Pittsburgh, where he worked for Monsanto and PPG Industries, where he was Product Manager. In 1993, Bob and Mary Eleanor retired to Virginia Beach. Mr. McCombie is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary Eleanor Bruce McCombie of Norfolk; his sister Doris of Cherry Hill, New Jersey; his children Mary Eleanor McCombie of New Haven, Connecticut; Bruce McCombie of Fredericksburg, Virginia; and Ann Landry of Dover, New Hampshire; and six beloved grandchildren, Andrew Friedberg; Ryan, Daniel, and Kathryn McCombie; and Mary Eleanor and Jack Landry. A Memorial Service will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church on Woodside Lane in Virginia Beach, at 1PM on Thursday, Oct. 4th. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be sent to All Saints Episcopal Church, 1969 Woodside Lane, Virginia Beach, VA, 23454, or to the charity of the donor's choice. H.D. OLIVER FUNERAL APARTMENTS, 1501 Colonial Avenue, Norfolk, VA is in charge of arrangements.
