CARTER VIRGINIA TOMPKINS CARR
80, died Saturday, November 10, 2012 at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville after a brief illness. Virginia was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, Kenneth Knox Carter, Sr. She is survived by her sons, Charles Gordon Carter and Kenneth Knox Carter, Jr., and their families, Hannah Wilcox Twaddell and Marion Elizabeth Carter of Charlottesville, and Margaret Casey Hendrickson and Carsten Rogers Carter of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Born in Charlottesville on August 8, 1932, Virginia grew up on her father's farm. She studied the clarinet at Oberlin Conservatory of Music and, in 1954, became one of the first women to earn a Bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia. She married Ken Carter in 1957, and the family lived in Charlottesville, New York, and Chicago before coming to the South Hills area of Pittsburgh. In the 1970s they moved to Wallingford Street in Oakland, where they lived for many happy years before retiring in 2007 to Virginia's family homestead in Charlottesville. A Memorial Service for Virginia will be held Saturday, December 8, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. in the University of Virginia Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Western Albemarle Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 188, Crozet, Virginia 22932.
