MacCAMY
RICHARD C.
Carnegie Mellon University Professor for more than 40 years has died. Dr. MacCamy, of Churchill, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 6, at his daughter's home in Naperville, IL. He was 85. Dr. MacCamy grew up an only child in Spokane, Washington. He left home to serve in the Air Force then attended Reed College on the GI bill. At Reed he met his wife of 57 years, Fae MacCamy. He received his Ph.D in Mathematics in 1956 from the University of California, Berkeley and moved to Pittsburgh that same year to join the Carnegie Tech Mathematics Department. He became a full professor in 1964. Over the course of his career at Carnegie Mellon Dr. MacCamy was respected and admired by his students, both undergraduate and graduate, as well as his colleagues. He was universally liked by all who came into contact with him; not just for his brilliant mind but for his modest and unassuming personality. Dr. MacCamy published more than 90 academic papers, as well as co-authored a text book. His research was recognized internationally and focused on mathematical applications in mechanics, electromagnetic theory and population models. He continued to stay active professionally after retirement and received the Richard Moore Education Award in 1997 in recognition of excellence in teaching at Carnegie Mellon. Richard raised three children with his wife, Fae. He was the kind of father who would always have time to do the little things like homework, going to the library or just talking. During those years there were many family vacations throughout the United States and Canada. He was also very involved with his grandchildren, taking special interest in their college plans as well as career aspirations. During their retirement Richard and Fae loved traveling to Europe, following the local theater and opera and were avid sports fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers. His death occurred exactly five years to day after hers. Richard is survived by his three children Marianne (Kerry) of Upper St. Clair, Robert (Donna) of Forest Hills and Janet (Robert) of Naperville , Illinois . He was the proud grandfather of Kate, Christopher, Megan, Robbie, Kathryn and Renee. He was loved dearly and will be greatly missed. Memorial donations may be made to Forbes Hospice, 4800 Friendship Avenue , Pittsburgh , PA 15224.

Marianne, Bob and Janet,

I just heard from my mother the news about the passing of your father and wanted to tell you that you and your family are in our prayers. Although it has been a long time, I fondly remember when I visit my mom on Garrick Drive and pass your house, the walks along the street your dad would take and the times he and my dad would stop, and spend time together talking about the old days, the kids and the Garrick Drive block parties. I consider your dad and mine the Mayors of Garrick Drive. My dad passed about 2 years ago and I miss him dearly. From the entire Crisanti Family our prayers are with you.

Dear Marianne & Family,

Please accept my heartfelt condolences on the passing of your father. I know how solicitous you were of him, especially after the passing of your mother 5 years ago.

A cultured person of superior intellect who was both modest & unassuming, your father led a distinguished personal & professional life. His beautiful smiling eyes are indelibly etched in my mind; I see them when i look at you my dearest friend.

Love always,
Doranne

Dear Marianne and Family,

I remember both your parents well, enjoying many dinners at your home during our college years. I admired and respected them both. My condolences on your recent loss of your father. I know how much you cared about him.

Richard Carlton MacCamy was a terrific teacher. I don't know a lot about his research, but I can tell you this -- he gave me a chance to prove myself when no one else would. I'm honored to be the last of his academic descendants.

On a few occasions, when a student of mine has been struggling and isn't sure he can make it in mathematics, I tell him about the guy who once gave me an "F" in a graduate course, but later took me under his wing as a dissertation student and guided me to a doctorate. I now chair the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Software Engineering at the University of Detroit Mercy, and I owe a lot of that to him.

Failure is a temporary condition -- success is forever. Also, humanity is a more integral part of mathematics than is ever mentioned in a textbook or research publication. These were the most important things Professor MacCamy taught me.

Dear MacCamy Children,
Dick and I spent many hours playing tennis and discussing math and physics in his office. He and Fae were good friends to me. I am sorry for your loss of both of them. They were truly caring people.
