Obituary Condolences

77, died peacefully with his family by his side, on January 10 in Winchester, Virginia. The first child of 8, Dave was born to a family of modest means in Pittsburgh, PA. In high school, Dave distinguished himself in athletics while attending the renowned Central Catholic High in Pittsburgh. His parents were inundated with mail containing professional baseball offers and college scholarships; however, these offers were unopened since they were viewed as unobtainable. A kindly coach explained the idea of a college scholarship to Dave's parents and he was off to a full scholarship to play football and baseball at Delaware University. Searching for the same discipline and purpose Dave received from the Christian Brothers at Central Catholic, Dave joined the United States Marine Corp upon graduation from Delaware in 1957. Once commissioned, he played baseball (as the catcher) for the Hawaiian Marines where he infamously threw out Willie Mays during an exposition game. In 1969, Dave received his Master's Degree at the Naval War College in Newport, RI. Dave had a 22 year career with the Marine Corps which included 2 combat tours of Vietnam, 2 Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star. Upon USMC retirement, Dave became a teacher and coach for Prince William County for 21 years. He coached the Potomac High School Varsity Baseball team to two consecutive AAA Virginia State Tournaments. Dave was predeceased in death by his wife of 49 years, Sharon. Dave is survived by his wife, Esther; his 5 children, Lori Morrell, Linda Schwarz, David J., Kenneth, and Steven "Bo" Colcombe; 19 grandchildren; 2 great- grandchildren. Dave's surviving siblings, John Colcombe, Dublin, Ohio, Albert Colcombe Washington, PA; Tom Colcombe, Patricia Bellows both of Pittsburgh, Ann Crean Wilmington, NC; Elizabeth "Rita" Colcombe, Cranberry Township. Calling hours at MOUNTCASTLE FUNERAL HOME on 1/21 at 4143 Dale Blvd., Dale City, VA 22193, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. On 1/22 at 10:30 a.m. a Funeral Mass will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 18825 Fuller Heights Rd., Triangle, VA 22172.
