1921 - 2014 Obituary Condolences
Passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014, at Longwood at Oakmont. Known to her friends as "Dot", Dorothy was born in Johnstown in 1921. A student leader and academic standout at Johnstown High School, she attended the University of Pittsburgh on a full scholarship, completing a degree in nursing with the first class of Pitt nurses in 1944. She pursued a graduate degree in nursing and was a pre-med course instructor at Pitt during World War II. Over nearly 60 years as a registered nurse, she worked in Pittsburgh University hospitals, private practice clinics in Northern California, and as a private duty nurse. Dorothy and John Glasson were married in 1943. After the end of World War II they moved to Marin County, California. There she fostered the rapidly expanding, post-war public school system in San Rafael, and was a president of the Marin County League of Women Voters. Returning to Pittsburgh in 1964, the Glasson family settled in Fox Chapel, where she lived until early 2012. She was a member and former deacon of the Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church, a former president of the Presbyterian University Hospital Aid Society of Pittsburgh, and was active in many other community organizations. An advocate for educational opportunities for women, Mrs. Glasson was a member and past president of the Fox Chapel chapter of the Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO). She is survived by her sons, Michael Glasson of Houston, Texas and Douglas Glasson of Manchester, Massachusetts; her grandchildren, Gregory, Mark, and Elizabeth Glasson; and great-granddaughters, Lauren and Emma Kate; she is also survived by her brothers, Paul and Gerald Hornick; her sister, Ruth Hornick Ward; daughters-in-law, Dianne Glasson and Patricia Moody; and many nieces and nephews. No visitation. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at the Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church or the Fox Chapel Chapter of PEO. Arrangements by the WEDDELL - AJAK FUNERAL HOME, Aspinwall.
