REV. JOHN W. "JACK"
Age 81, of East McKeesport, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 31, 2014. He was born on January 27, 1933, in Wilkinsburg, he attended elementary school at St. Aloysius in Wilmerding/East McKeesport. He graduated from St. Peters in McKeesport. In 1956, he received his Bachelor's in Science and Education from Duquesne University, in 1962, he received his Master's of Education from Duquesne University, in 1971, he received his Master's of Arts in Trinity College in Hartford, CT, in 1984, he received his Master's of Divinity from Mt. St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg, MD. He was a Fulbright Scholar for one year in Brussels, Belgium. His teaching assignments included the former Scott High School in Braddock, former Westinghouse Memorial High School in Wilmerding, and he retired from Brentwood High School after 30 years of service teaching French and Spanish. He was ordained on May 12, 1984, by Bishop Anthony Bevilacqua at St. Paul Cathedral, Pittsburgh, PA. He was incardinated into the Diocese of Pittsburgh on May 12, 1984. He retired from service on January 31, 2003. He was a Parochial Vicar from May 29, 1984 to January 22, 1987 at St. Canice Parish in Pittsburgh, he was the Parochial Vicar from January 23, 1987 to July 19, 1993 at St. Columbkille Parish in Imperial, from July 19, 1993 to October 11, 1999, he was the Parochial Vicar in St. Colman Parish in Turtle Creek from October 11, 1999 to January 31, 2003, he was the Parochial Vicar in St. Bernard Parish in Pittsburgh. His other roles were the confessor for the Sisters of Charity and the Chaplain for the Catholic Daughters of America. He was a U.S. Army veteran. A son of the late Joseph and Rose (Flood) Markell; beloved brother of Mary Ida Markell and the late Bernadette L. "Bernie" (the late Roy) Karp; dear uncle of Sharon (Lenny) Oddo, Barb (Dr. Larry) Breitenstein, John (Pam) Karp, and Eric Karp; great-uncle of Stephanie (Ray) Schmitt, Nicholas Oddo, Ann Breitenstein, Rachel Muzika, Jennifer, Muzika, Kaitlyn Karp, Lauren Karp, and Zachary Karp; devoted friend of Barry (Cheryl) Hines and family. Family and friends will be received on Wednesday, April 2, 2014, from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. at St. Colman R.C. Church, 100 Triboro Ave., Turtle Creek, PA 15145-1966, (412) 823-2564, where Vespers will be held on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Additional visitation at St. Colman Church on Thursday from 9 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m., with the Most Rev.
