JOHN N. MANDALAKAS Obituary
MANDALAKAS
JOHN N.
Of North Huntingdon, age 78, on Tuesday, April 15, 2014. John was born January 9, 1936, in Chios, Greece, son of the late Nikolaos and Lambrini (Couladis) Mandalakas. He immigrated to the United States in 1956. He was sponsored by his uncle, George Couladis and his wife, Aspacia, and was also supported by his beloved aunts, Alexandra Macos and Argyri Kollikias. He attended Ohio University and graduated in 1961. After graduation, he married Kay Papaliodis and moved to Western PA to work at the Westinghouse Semi-Conductor Division in Youngwood. During those early years of his career, he attended Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon) at night and obtained his Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering. He later worked at Westinghouse's Nuclear Division and at the Transportation Division, where he was instrumental in developing control systems for their 'People Mover' project. For this seminal work, he was awarded the IEEE US Engineer of the Year award. John left Westinghouse to found Mesta Electronics in North Huntingdon. He was always proud that Mesta manufactures in Southwestern PA and uses components made in the United States. John found great satisfaction from his work on behalf of the Greek Orthodox Church and the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate in Constantinople. In recognition of his tireless dedication to the church, he was bestowed the title of "Archon" in 2002. He was a political activist who supported the occupied nation of Cyprus, Greek national defense and religious freedom in Turkey. John was an avid Pittsburgh sports fan and enjoyed playing golf, especially with the Bombardier Golf League for the past 40 years. John was also very proud of the educational accomplishments of his children and other relatives. Beloved husband of Kay (Papaliodis) Mandalakas for 52 years; loving father of Nicholas of Lancaster, Debbie (Peter) Leventopoulos of North Huntingdon, Anna (Edwin Caldwell) of Houston, TX and Elaine (Andrew) Demos of Wading River, NY; dear grandfather of John Nicholas Mandalakas, Dean and Yianni Leventopoulos, Kalliopi, Clare Markella and Thaleia Caldwell, Alexander Andrew and Ariyana Demos; brother of Paul Mandalakas of Monaca and Despina Mylonadis of Greece; also survived by beloved nieces and nephews.
