1927 - 2014 Obituary Condolences
Born at home in the Oakland area of Pittsburgh, PA on Oct. 23, 1927, she died in the Meadowcrest Nursing Center in Bethel Park, PA on April 22, 2014, at the age of 86. Despo was preceded in death by her parents, Gus Ganopulos, former proprietor of Gus's Place in Homestead, and Roxanne (Ekakiades) Ganopulos of Greece; and three brothers, Emmanuel I, James G., and Emmanuel II, all of Homestead. Despo is survived by her only son, James Korekach of McKeesport and his wife, Susan; three grandsons, Ian James Korekach of Trafford, Adam Luke Korekach of McKeesport, and Douglas C. Korekach and wife, Christine, of Munhall; three great- grandchildren, Evan James, Derek Alexander, and Claire Marie; also numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews throughout the U.S. and Greece. Despo was both baptized and married in St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Oakland and remained proud of her Greek heritage and steadfast in her faith. Raised in the Homestead area, she attended school there where she used her considerable artistic talents on the staffs of the school's newspaper and yearbook. She attended Carnegie Art Institute with the dream of entering fashion design, alas, economic necessity and marriage waylaid those plans. Spending her third and fourth decades as a stay-at-home mom, she became a community organizer and fundraiser, member and past-president of the Marigold Elementary PTO in the Munhall Gardens area. She was also an avid bowler, dancer, and singer of Broadway show tunes and opera in their language of origin. She re-entered the working world as a sales clerk for the former Sun Drug Co., working her way up to store manager at the Squirrel Hill, Oakland, and downtown Pittsburgh locations. She ended her career in retail for the May Co. as a cosmetics consultant for Clinique at Kaufmann's flagship store downtown. A special thanks to the staff at Meadowcrest of Bethel Park for caring for Despo for nearly seven years and Bethany Hospice in her final days. Also special recognition to her lifelong friends, Christina (Tenekedes) Burke, and her sisters, Angie and Eva, whose loyalty will not be forgotten. Visitation will be held Friday 2-8 p.m. with the Trisagion Service at 7 p.m. at the JEFFERSON MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, INC., 301 Curry Hollow Road, Pleasant Hills. A Funeral Service will be held Saturday 9 a.m. in Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church, 123 Gilkeson Road, Upper St. Clair, PA. EVERYONE PLEASE MEET AT CHURCH. Interment in Jefferson Memorial Park. Donations may be made to Animal Friends, 562 Camp Horne Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15237, the Western PA Conservancy or the of Western PA, Western Pennsylvania Chapter, 100 West Station Square, Suite 1950, Pittsburgh, PA 15219.
