Age 88, of McCandless Twp., passed away peacefully in his sleep, Tuesday, April 29, 2014, in Canterbury Place Hospice in Lawrenceville. He was born February 25, 1926, in Schwarzenburg, Switzerland to the late Hermann Alexander and Martha (Oberli) Meier. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 60 years, Inez (Johnson) and brother, Konrad Meier. Mr. Meier retired from the U.S. Postal Service after many years of service in the Observatory Hill, Bellevue and McKnight branches. Hans was a civilian employee for the U.S. Government in Germany (1946-1952) where he met and married Inez (Johnson), also a civilian employee for the U.S. Government, in Wiesbaden, Germany in 1949. He is survived by his children, James (Heidi) Meier, Kenneth (Nancy Beth) Meier, LuAnn (Thomas) George, Michele (Kevin) McFarland, Nancy (Scott) Carson, Owen Meier; 15 grandchildren and three great- grandchildren. Yodeling, singing in German and playing his beloved bass fiddle were his passions. He yodeled/sang with both the Swiss Maennerchor Helvetzia (a member since 1952) and the German Maennerchor Teutonia (a member since 1990) and was a frequent performer in many of the Pittsburgh Folk Festivals. He was a member of several local folk bands. Hans was involved in scouting for 44 years and was Cubmaster of Cub Scout Pack 171 (formally 335) for 40 of those years, achieving many awards in doing so. As well as being an avid gardener, Hans was an avid camper and loved to travel, managing to visit all 50 U.S. states, most of Europe and Canada. Friends will be received on Thursday and Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the H. P. BRANDT FUNERAL HOME, INC., 1032 Perry Hwy., Ross Twp., 412-364-4444.
