Obituary Condolences

Sister Karen Diamond (Evelyn Diamond), a Pittsburgh Sister of Mercy for 62 years, died at UPMC Mercy Hospital on May 9, 2014. Born in Masontown, PA, she was 83 years old. Daughter of Emet and Minnie (Buffano) Diamond, Sister Karen entered the Sisters of Mercy from All Saints Parish in Masontown, PA in 1951 and made final vows in 1957. Sister Karen earned a Bachelor of Science Ed from Carlow College (now Carlow University). She taught at various area Catholic schools including St. Maurice, Forest Hills, St. Elizabeth, Pleasant Hills, Our Lady of Fatima, Hopewell Twp, St. Peter Northside, and Holy Family in Latrobe, PA. From 1994, she ministered at the Children's Center at Carlow University. Upon retiring from teaching, Sister Karen was the seamstress at the Motherhouse and made many beautiful craft items as well as needs for the convent. Sister Karen was a no fuss-no muss person. Her smile could light up a room. She performed her duties as Sacristan quietly and efficiently always with a smile. Sister Margaret Haring stated, "Sister Karen was really a stay-at-home person, but we enjoyed two wonderful trips together. We traveled by bus to Oglebay to the Christmas lights, and we went on a six day bus tour of New England, and had a wonderful time." Preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Emet, Jr., Rudy, and Bill and sisters, Pearl Stranko and Stella Tomasik, Sister Karen is survived by nieces, Lottie Del Signore, Monroeville, PA and Adele Siba of Masontown, PA. Friends will be received Monday, May 12, 2014, from 1-8 p.m. at the Convent of Mercy, 3333 Fifth Avenue. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel at the Convent of Mercy, followed by interment in St. Xavier Cemetery, Latrobe. Arrangements entrusted to the EDWARD P. KANAI FUNERAL HOME, 500 Greenfield Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Mercy, 3333 Fifth Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15213 or Carlow University Scholarship Program.
