1929 - 2014 Obituary Condolences
Age 85, of Pittsburgh, passed away on Sunday, May 25, 2014. Born on January 12, 1929, the only child of Louis and Sally Steiner. He was born and raised in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn, NY. After a storied childhood, regaled to his children and grandchildren, he served in the Corps of Engineers during the Korean War. Stationed in Fort Belvoir, Virginia, he designed maps and training aids. He attended Pratt Institute, switching from aeronautical engineering to design when the need for fighter planes waned after the war. His designs of scale models in the petroleum and chemical industries became the standard method of design until CAD emerged in the computer era. He became president of Visual Industrial Products and expanded scale modeling applications to the steel, space, nuclear, and metalworking industries. After the Three Mile Island Nuclear accident, he started a new industry in design and training aids for nuclear operators. His works are exhibited internationally and in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. He loved to travel, read, spend time with his family, learn about investing behavior, take classes in continuing adult learning at CMU, follow the latest technological breakthroughs, and watch baseball. He was a member of Rodef Shalom for 57 years. He is survived by his loving wife, Rochelle Steiner; his son, Craig Steiner (Michele); his daughter, Ilene Illovsky (Eugene Illovsky); and five granddaughters, Claire, Jill and Carolyn Steiner, and Lauren and Jayne Illovsky.
