ANNA (SY) KAO Obituary
Age 80, of Pittsburgh, on Tuesday, June 17, 2014, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Anna Sy Kao was born in Shantung, China on December 16, 1933. She graduated from the University of Taiwan in 1961 with a degree in culinary arts. She went on to complete culinary programs at five different cooking schools. After immigrating to the United States in 1962, she started teaching Chinese cooking classes in 1964 and, in 1973, opened the popular Anna Kao's Chinese Restaurant. In 1982, she became the third woman inducted to the American Academy of Chefs. Throughout her life, Anna pursued and promulgated excellence in the Chinese culinary arts. Anna was preceded in death by her parents, Tze-Ming and Su-Min Sy; and her late husband of 45 years, Yu Chang Kao. Anna is survived by her three children, Yuan Kao of Tampa, Joan Kao of Pittsburgh, and Lisa (Chuck) Judge of Los Angeles; four grandsons, Tyler, Christopher, Cameron, and Carter Judge of Los Angeles; and two brothers, Bill Sy of Phoenix and Dick Sy of Salt Lake City. In accordance with her wishes, a formal viewing and funeral services will not be held. Memorial services in memory of Anna will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Crossroads Foundation, 2915 Webster Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15219, (412) 621-9422. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff and workers who provided care and support for Anna this past year and all the friends for their emotional support to Anna and the family.
