1930 - 2014 | Obituary Condolences
Of North Canton, Ohio, formerly of Mt. Lebanon (Pittsburgh), Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, June 16, 2014. She was born in Wheeling, West Virginia on June 3, 1930, to the late Ursel and Mary Florence (Brock) Loy. She graduated from Triadelphia High School in 1948. After graduation she worked in the Technical Library at PPG's Natrium, WV chemical plant. There, she met Ben Evans and in late 1949, they were married and united for over 64 years. Nancy was devoted to her family, raising three sons who reflected her fundamental values of respect for others, a disciplined work ethic, self-reliance, faith in God, devotion to country, and service for the betterment of the communities in which she lived. She was the creative spirit of the family teaching the values of art, music, and literature to her own and all boys in an environment dominated by sports, math, science, and outdoor activities. She was a gifted painter and amateur sculptor, with many of her works displayed at art shows and local events in the tri-state area. Nancy was active in the Boy Scouts of America serving as a Cub Scout Den Mother and a counselor for the Boy Scouts Citizenship merit badges. Through her teaching, she educated and inspired a generation of scouts on the values of God and Country and service to the community. She was indeed pleased her three sons achieved the Eagle rank and proudly wore her three Eagle pins at scout functions. Nancy was very active in her community. After successfully overcoming cancer early in her life, she worked in the American Cancer Society fund-raising drives and chairing education programs in West Virginia and Western Pennsylvania. She was active in the Mount Lebanon League of Women Voters, strongly supportive for women's rights and equality. She was a member and officer of the Mount Lebanon Women's Club where activities were focused on charitable work throughout the community. She was a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church serving in the Altar Guild, singing in the choir, and teaching Sunday and Bible school classes. She served several terms on the Church Vestry. Her proudest accomplishment was completion of studies to become a Eucharistic Minister of the Episcopal Church. She holds a diploma for completion of EFM from Sewanee: The University of the South. She was a lifelong scholar of biblical and theological studies. At St. Paul's Mt. Lebanon, she joined the Daughters of the King, an Episcopal order devoted to prayer, service, and Evangelism. Nancy's devotion to faith, church, and charitable services inspired many to follow her example toward those in need. After relocating to North Canton, Ohio in 2003, she became an active member in The Herb Society at the Hoover Historical Center and served two terms as President. She was also involved in antiques and well versed in glassware and the industry in general. Late in her life she became a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church. She so loved the Pastor's Wednesday morning Bible study activities and attended as frequently as her health permitted. She was a kind, gentle, Christian lady devoted to her faith and service to God. Finally, the family would like to express their sincere gratitude for the many acts of kindness and love shown to them by her friends and care givers, especially Transitional HealthCare Solutions, LLC. We would not have been able to navigate through her prolonged illness without them. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Roger Wayne Loy and beloved granddaughter, Kathleen Marie-Soo Evans. Nancy is survived by her husband, Ben E. Evans; sons, Mark (Patti) Evans of San Antonio, Texas, Stephen (Susan) Evans of Hartville, Ohio, and Eric (Doris) Evans of Atlanta, Georgia; and grandchildren, Daniel Evans, Theresa (Allen) Cruz, Emily Evans, and William Evans.
