Obituary Condolences

Age 89, of Knoxville, TN, formerly of Maryville, TN and Pittsburgh, PA, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 19, 2014. Nadean was born and raised in Monterey, California. She graduated from college. In 1946, she married the love of her life, Robert "Bob" D. Hornbeck. She shared her life with him for the next 65 years until his passing in December 2011. Nadean was a very devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great- grandmother. She was very civic minded as was evidenced by her support of her family for several years as a Boy and Girl Scout Troop Leader and a PTA officer for several years. Nadean was also a former member of the Episcopal Women's Altar Guild. Bob's 38 years with ALCOA required significant travel over the years. Nadean was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in her 30s. For the next 30 years, she traveled the world with her husband to carry out his executive duties with ALCOA as she battled the challenging conditions of MS. Their travels included living for three years in Perth, Australia, as Bob served as the Western Australia Operations General Manager. Bob always said that his work efforts were insignificant to her daily living challenges. Remarkably, Nadean's determination and strength overcame the debilitating effects of MS to live a productive life to the age of 89. Nadean was preceded in death by her husband, Robert D. Hornbeck; father, Leslie Allen Hicks; mother, Emily Puget Hicks; and sister, Lorraine Hicks Jeffers. She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Janis and Ed Stout of Knoxville; son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Jeanne Hornbeck of Camarillo, CA; grandchildren, Angela Stout Harris, Aaron Edward Stout, Bryan Edward Paylor, Julia Hornbeck Chavez and husband, Frank, Christa Hornbeck Tackett and husband, A. J., Nicholas Hornbeck; great-grandchildren, Nelson, Shelby and Lacey Harris, and Claire and Aiden Tackett; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Donald and Sandy Hornbeck; sister, Margorie Hicks MacCulloch; several nieces and nephews. Nadean's family offers special thanks to Dr. Gonzalez-Bonilla and the staff of Little Creek Sanitarium for their excellent and loving care. A private service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, www.nationalmssociety.org, or to a .
