EUGENE JOSEPH "GENE" "IGGY"
Age 96, of East McKeesport, died Friday, August 1, 2014. Born August 5, 1917, in McKeesport, a son of the late Mieczyslaw and Magdalena (Kowalski) Wiater, he was the last of the Wiater brothers who were standout athletes in the McKeesport area. A member of St. Robert Bellarmine Church, East McKeesport, Gene was employed as the manager of Landesman News Agency for over 40 years and then bought and renamed the Agency to Wiater News Agency. He was a former councilman in East McKeesport, lifetime member of the Hilltoppers VFW post 3480 in East McKeesport, and a past president of the East McKeesport Volunteer Fire Co. #2. Iggy was an avid Pirates fan who rarely missed a game on the radio. He enlisted in the Navy immediately after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and was part of the 95 Battalion Navy Seabees, where he served in the South Pacific Theater for four years. He will be remembered as fun loving, generous, compassionate and a God fearing man who loved his family and always put others first. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of over 41 years, Ellen Virginia (Bernsdorff) Wiater; brothers, Joseph, John, Edward, Peter and Andrew "Pug" Wiater; and sister, Helen Bernsdorff. He is survived by children, Thomas (Linda) Wiater, Richard (Deborah) Wiater, and Nancy (Joseph) Muha; grandchildren, Neil, Charles, Jennifer, Kathryn, and Derek; great-grandchildren, Lexi and Evan; numerous nieces and nephews; and caregiver, Laura Beck. Friends and family will be received 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the FORGIE SNYDER FUNERAL HOME, 1032 Broadway, East McKeesport, 412-823-8083. Funeral Mass 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at St. Robert Bellarmine Church, East McKeesport. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, North Versailles.
