Dr. MERLE J. MOSKOWITZ Obituary
MOSKOWITZ Dr. MERLE J.
Age 86, of Oakland, passed away on August 2, 2014, at St. John's Specialty Care Center in Mars, PA. Born May 30, 1928, in McKeesport, he was the son of the late Joseph and Rose (Fried) Moskowitz of McKeesport; and beloved brother of the late (August 2, 2014) Myrna J. (Moskowitz) Berman of Monroeville. Merle is survived by his brother-in-law, Myron J. Berman; his niece, Susan (Gary) Bernstein of Fishkill, NY; and nephews, Michael (Patty) Berman of Cranberry Twp., PA, and Dr. Robert Berman of New York, NY; he was great-uncle to Jennifer (Eric) Kennett, Allison Bernstein, Joseph Bernstein, and Ashley Berman. Educated at the University of Pittsburgh and Harvard, Merle taught in the psychology department at Bowdoin College in Maine for five years. He joined the psychology department faculty at Pitt in 1960 and served as the department's assistant chairman from 1968-74 and Associate Chairman from 1974 until 1989, when he became the interim dean and then associate dean for graduate studies in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Pitt. He retired from Pitt in 1996 after a distinguished 36 year career there as a dedicated and gifted teacher, administrator, and mentor to countless graduate students. Merle loved history, classical music, film, and mystery novels, and attended the opera, symphony, and chamber concerts avidly. He will be remembered by family, friends, and former colleagues and students as a brilliant, warm, and remarkably generous man. No visitation. Private memorial. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the University of Pittsburgh, or to St. John's Specialty Care at www.lutheranseniorlife.org/senior- living/locations/st-john-specialty- care-center.
