1948 - 2014 Obituary Condolences
Of Bennington, VT, formerly of Pittsburgh PA, died of ALS on Friday, August 15, 2014, at the Vermont Veterans Home. Brother to Robert M. Gibney of Dorset, VT and Janet G. Pillard of Vero Beach, FL; and brother-in-law to Salley Gibney and Edward Pillard; and uncle to Dr. Salley Anne Pels, Matthew Gibney, Tiffany Serafin, Kelly, Craig and Eric Pillard. Born in New York City on February 17, 1948, Alan grew up in Syosset, New York. Alan was a graduate of Clarkson University, BS degree in Chemical Engineering 1969, and Penn State MS degree in Physical Chemistry in 1976. After active duty in the US Army Corps of Engineers, from 1969 to 1976, in Thailand, Germany, and Vietnam, Captain Alan Gibney began his 35-year career at the Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory in Pittsburgh, PA. As Chief Engineer and Senior Advisor, Alan's contributions to Naval nuclear ship engineering for submarines and aircraft carriers were epic. His last project of designing the propulsion system for the advanced aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford was completed just prior to the onset of his ALS affliction, which led to his early retirement. Throughout his devastating illness during the last ten months, Alan demonstrated courage and dignity to his family, friends and the staff and residents at the Vermont Veterans Home. Alan was the catalyst for the monthly ALS Support Group and the ALS Walk to be held in Bennington this October 2014. His generosity and dedication to family, friends, and to his country through military and civilian contributions to our Nation's security, will be deeply missed. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, August 21, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. at the Four Chaplains All Faith Memorial Chapel at the Vermont Veterans Home, Bennington, VT, following a private Interment in Saratoga National Cemetery. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to The Friends of Vermont Veterans Home, through the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
