ELMER B. "DUTCH"
Age 91, of Dormont, died peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loving family, on Monday, August 18, 2014. Son of the late Francis P. Gray and the late Lillian Burtt Gray Grimes; beloved husband of the late Elizabeth Scharding "Butch" Gray; loving father of Mary Beth (Fred) Gigler, Dr. Elaine (the late Arthur) Gorr, Lisa (Robert) Tenney and Stasi Longo; devoted papa of Chip (Shelley) Fisher, Matthew (Darlene) Fisher, Mark (Tara) Fisher, Kelley Gigler (Andy) Young, Suzie Gigler (Kyle) Vuksan, Leah (Sean) Bonasorte Burke , Matthew (Heather) Gorr, Carl (Melissa) Gorr, Brian (Tamara) Tenney, David (Erin) Tenney, Michael (Madalynn) Tenney, Tayler Longo (Cameron) Hutton; great-grandpapa of 21; brother of Doris Jean (George) Ogg and the late Francis P. Gray, Jr.; brother-in-law of Mary Louise Scharding Gordon, Anne Scharding and the late Regis, Syvila, Leo "Ham" and Margaret Scharding; loving uncle of Gary, Geori, Leslie, George, Shawn and Kelly Ogg, William Brickel, Susan Legler, Vicky Schneider and many more nieces and nephews. Elmer was a graduate of South Hills High (Class of 1940) and an army veteran of WW-II. He began his baseball career as an all-star minor league second baseman with the St. Louis Browns and with the Dormont semi-professional baseball league. Elmer went on to become a professional baseball scout for the St. Louis Browns, the Baltimore Orioles and the Cincinnati Reds. In 1984 he was offered his dream job as scouting director for the Pittsburgh Pirates and held that position until 1994. He continued on with the Pirates in various scouting capacities until his retirement in December 2012. Elmer was also a baseball and basketball official for the WPIAL and Carnegie Mellon University for over 40 years. He was a longtime active member of St. Bernard Church in Mt. Lebanon and a member of American Legion Post #490 in Castle Shannon. Friends may call at LAUGHLIN MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 222 Washington Road, Mt. Lebanon THURSDAY and FRIDAY 4-8 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Bernard Church Saturday morning at 11:30 (please meet at church). Interment will follow in Mt. Lebanon Cemetery. IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, memorials may be made to Professional Baseball Scouts Foundation, 5010 N.
