THOMAS J. DORMER Sr. Obituary
DORMER
THOMAS J., Sr.
Age 88 of Wilkins Twp., passed away Saturday, January 7, 2017. Beloved husband of the late Eleanor M. (Keane) Dormer; loving father of Thomas (Lou Ann), John (Linda), Michael (Laura), Mark (Annie), and Brian (Esther) Dormer; brother of the late Marie Ross; also survived by 13 grandchildren; ten great- grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and his longtime friend, Donna Keenan. Thomas was born in North Philadelphia in 1928. He was a big brother to his beloved sister, Marie. He attended St. Joe's Prep shortly after his father's death when he was 16. Upon graduation, Tom started his career in the insurance business following his father's profession. He moved with his wife, Eleanor, and his first son, Tom, to Pittsburgh in 1950 to further his career. In 1953, he moved to Eastmont, a small neighborhood in the eastern suburbs where they had four more sons. As his career progressed, Tom befriended many in the insurance business and was well loved and respected. In 1995, Tom was voted insurance person of the year and later served on the Board of Directors for the Insurance Club of Pittsburgh. He also served as a Board Member for the Regis Insurance Company. In his early 40's, he began to pursue his passion for aviation and shortly thereafter received his private and instrument licenses. Many memorable flights were made with the family to the Jersey Shore, Wisconsin, Canada and Florida. Tom was proud of his flying skills and continued to fly into his late 60's. As strong as his passion was for flying was his passion for the Steelers. After acquiring season tickets in 1973, Tom rarely missed a home game with one of his sons. That passion culminated with two super bowl trips, the last one when he was 81 years young. Tom leaves behind a large family and many friends who will miss his warmth, generosity, laughter and loyalty. Friends will be received Friday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the JOBE FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY, INC. (MONROEVILLE / PLUM CHAPEL), corner of (445) Beatty Rd. and 48 North, Monroeville (412-856-4747). Mass of Christian Burial at St. Bernadette Parish Saturday, 10 a.m. Private interment in Good Shepherd Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, 1 Oxford Centre, 301 Grant St., Pittsburgh, PA 15219 or online at www.wounded warriorproject.org. www.jobefuneralhome.com
