Obituary Condolences

Age 89, of Greensburg, formerly of Churchill and Murrysville, has passed away peacefully. He lived a generous and selfless life for just over 89 years, and he was the dedicated husband to Jacqueline Dorich (formerly Meyers) Walter for more than 26 years. His life ended Sunday, June 24, 2018, with his loved ones nearby. A very spiritual and moral gentleman, he was preceded in death by his parents, W. Floyd Walter, M.D. and Mary (Conoran) Walter; uncle, Howard Miller; and first wife, Helen (Sullivan) Walter. In addition to Jacqueline, he is survived by his sister, Patricia M. Walter. He was the loving father to Mary Kathleen Harding, Karin Rainah Walter and Mary Beth Overcashier and their respective spouses, Warren J. Harding and Jan A. Overcashier; and loving grandfather to four beloved grandchildren, Michael, Brian, Grant and Alex. He also enjoyed a long and loving relationship with stepchildren, Christopher Meyers, Valerie (Russ) Buck, Nicholas (Lori Anne) Meyers, Anita (P.J.) Simpson; step-grandchildren, Tim, Birdie, Jordan, Kayla, Heather, Bruce, Megan, Connor and Claire; step-great-grandchildren, Waverly, Lillian, Doug and Hunter. He is also survived by special lifelong friend, Alan Obley. William, intimately known as Bill, Will or Dr. Bill, was a respected physician and teacher of obstetrics and gynecology since 1955. He served in the Navy Medical Corps, active from 1955 thru 1957 as a medical doctor, with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. His practice, located in Monroeville for many years, served generations. After completing medical school at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Bill did his residency at St. Francis Medical Center and internship at Columbia Health Center. Initially, he went into the practice of medicine with his father, W.F. Walter, in Turtle Creek, and during his career had been associated with the Braddock, Columbia, Magee and Forbes Regional Hospitals. Long after he retired from the practice of medicine, Bill continued to be recognized by people in the community for the care he provided and the many lives he helped bring into the world. He was a member of the AMA, Pittsburgh OB/GYN Society, and volunteered as a medical doctor in Alaska, New Mexico and New Kensington, PA, and at Forbes Family Practice. He enjoyed being a private pilot, skiing, golfing and traveling. Most recently, he enjoyed the camaraderie experienced with his buddies as an active member of the Triple Crown Circle Grounds Committee. As a member of Blessed Sacrament Cathedral in Greensburg for the past 18 years, he found great comfort in his faith as well as in his family. Special thanks to the Simpson family for their love and support 24/7, and for the patient and compassionate hospice nurses and aides. Family and friends will be received from 4-9 p.m. Monday at the VAIA FUNERAL HOME, INC., 463 Athena Drive, Delmont, (724) 468-1177. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in Blessed Sacrament Cathedral, 300 N. Main St, Greensburg, PA 15601. Everyone please meet at the church. Entombment in Twin Valley Memorial Park, Delmont, will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to "Westmoreland Conservancy/Walter Reserve, in memory of William J. Walter" (PO Box 446, Murrysville, PA 15668), or to the Salvation Army or St. Vincent DePaul Society. To send online expressions of sympathy, obtain grief support information or directions, please visit:
