DR. ROBERT GARLAND
Son of the late Robert Orville Kisner and the late Thelma Jackson Kisner, was born on June 15, 1940 in Lexington, Kentucky. After completing his elementary and middle school years in the Pittsburgh Public Schools, he graduated from Schenley High School in 1959. In High School he participated in several school clubs and worked after school at Harris' Drug Store. After graduating from High School, Dr. Kisner attended Morgan State University in Baltimore, MD where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1964. At Morgan, Dr. Kisner was one of the stars of the school swim team. His passion for swimming led to many scuba diving and snorkeling adventures. He married Gloria Hinmon in 1963. Of this union was born two cherished children, Robert Anthony Kisner (deceased) in 1968 and Angela Lee Kisner Gregory in 1972. He was a loving and doting father; his children were the joy of his life. Family was very important to Dr. Kisner and he also enjoyed a very special bond with his family, especially his brothers and sister, nieces and nephews. Dr. Kisner continued his education at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee where he earned his MD Degree in 1969. He did his internship and residency in Obsterics and Gynecology at Magee Women's Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. Dr. Kisner was a member of the medical staff at Magee Women's Hospital for thirty one years. Additionally, he was the Medical Director of the Family Planning Council of Western Pennsylvania for many years. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Mt. Ararat Community Activity Center. Dr. Kisner was a member of several medical organizations including: the Alleghany County Obstetrics and Gynecology Society, the Pennsylvania Medical Society, the American Medical Association, the National Medical Association, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Chi Delta Mu Fraternity, and the Gateway Medical Society. Dr. Kisner spent his entire medical career serving women of our community, particularly the medically disadvantaged, having located his practice in the East Liberty section of the city for thirty one years. He was instrumental in delivering three to four generations of women in this community. He was a caring, loving, kind, and generous person who had a true passion and compassion for his work. In addition to his parents, Dr. Kisner was predeceased in death by his son Robert Anthony Kisner, and three brothers: Edward, Delbert, and Andrew Kisner. Dr. Kisner leaves to cherish his memories, one daughter, Angela Lee Kisner Gregory; two brothers, William T. Kisner and James W. Kisner (Leslie); one sister, Denise Kisner Parker, and a cherished granddaughter, Alexis Lee Gregory. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
