I always knew him as Karl, the secluded next door neighbor in the large, eerie white house a little up the hill. Growing up we never really talked much, except when he yelled at me to get off his lawn when I played whiffle ball. But in the final years of his life, when cancer was insidiously taking over his health, we became good friends. A new family has recently bought his house and one of the owners talked to me today about the achievements of Karl and Marilyn...and all I could think about was that in 23 years Karl never said one word about Night of the Living Dead of any of his many achievements. Not one word. That is the trait of a real man, a man devoid of ego and pride. That is the man I'll always remember and tell my kids about. Rest in peace Karl, God bless.

Though this guest book will leave us soon, the memories of Karl will not. Im just sorry he was not able to join the other cast member's on the 40th anniv tour of N.O.T.L.D. this year. As great as the film is, without Karl Hardman, it would not have the soul and legacy that it enjoy's today! We miss you Mr. Hardman. Rest in peace. Loren Portillo.

IMAGINE IF KARL HAD NOT APPEARED IN NOTLD? HE BROUGHT A TRUE SENSE OF REALISM TO THE FILM WITH A STARK QUALITY OF PORTRAYING A MAN CAUGHT UP IN A NIGHTMARISH WORLD, GRIPPED BY PANIC AND FEAR IN A STRUGGLE FOR SURVIVAL. KARL'S PARTICIPATION IN NOTLD HELPED TO MAKE THAT FILM A CLASSIC. IT WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN THE SAME MOVIE WITHOUT HIM. AH, YOU WERE RIGHT, HARRY COOPER, THE CELLER WAS THE SAFEST PLACE!! REST IN HEAVEN, KARL.

My condolences to Karl's family; having just learned of his passing. I knew Karl through his affection for antique autos. A sales lead he gave helped me greatly when starting my own restoration shop. He was so humble...I never knew of his connection to NOTLD. I only knew of his Industrial Films. Karl, Eternal Rest in your new ride.

It was great seeing Karl on the big screen last night at The 40th Anniversary screening of NOLD at the Inwood Theater in Dallas Texas. It was a great start to the kick off Of The Texas Frightmare Weekend 2008. What was unique is the film was shown from an orginal print with all its grainyness and B&W which made it all the better giving you authentic feeling. Its not the same without Karl being here but we salute him just the same for being a part of Zombie History.

He was an awesome actor in "Night of the Living Dead". I wish his family the best. I would loved to had the chance to meet him, but the lord asked him to come home. Hopefully he is walking around Heaven waiting for the rest of his family to join him. Karl, Russ, George, Marilyn and Bill started the Zombie genre and I thank you for that. I love Zombie flicks because of you guys!! God Bless

To Kyra and family, and friends of Karl Hardman Schon,
Like so many others, I too am terribly saddened at the death of Mr. Karl Hardman. What an honor it was to meet him at two different conventions. My first time was at the Monster Bash in Monroeville, Pennsylvania in the summer of 1998, and the second time was near Cleveland at the Cinema Wasteland convention in Strongsville, Ohio.
It was such a treat and a pleasure to talk with him. He was so gracious and kind to all his fans, and had a terrific sense of humor!
I feel so privileged to have met the man, who not only was a wonderful talent, but was truly very nice...a great guy. He, and the entire cast of NOTLD were such a part of my movie enjoyment from 1968 and forward. I lost count (after about 50 viewings between 1968-1975, and through the present) of just exactly how many times I've watched that immortal classic. As this month of October rolls along toward Halloween, I will again watch NOTLD as I always do, but it will have a sadness attached to it. I will miss him.
With Warmest Regards,
Scott Goettel

We have lived in Michigan since late 1958 so my only contact with Karl since leaving Pittsburgh has been occosional phone conversations mostly about cars. But I remember him from a standpoint not mentioned in this guestbook which might interest some of his friends. From the 1953 thru 1958 era we were both members of the Classic Car Club. I remember 2 of the cars he owned, a 1937 Packard Convertible and a 1937 Packard V-12 sedan. He was always very enthusiastic about cars and could talk for hours about them. I remember him calling me many years later for some advice on a 1954 Bentley Continental he was restoring. I have very fond memories of his great sense of humor, kindness, friendliness, and his breaking into funny voice imitations while talking. A great guy who I know is sorely missed by his family and all who knew him. My condolences to all his friends and family.

Like many others I, too, started out as a fan and became a friend. What I treasure most about Karl was that whenever we crossed paths there was always laughter (and very often an exchange in character voices, which he was still very good at!) Karl is certainly unlike any other person I've ever met and I will miss his uniqueness in a world of the ordinary. Ruhen Sie in Frieden mein Freund.

Dearest Karl,
You & the rest of the cast/crew were my inspiration when I first started my journey into the world of indie filmmaking. I met yourself, Marilyn & Kyra in NJ at a chiller convention and you guys were so great. Friendly and full of life. I had a picture taken between you guys and it resides in my photo album and states "My 2nd parents." You will always be with us each & everytime we all put NOLD on (Which is quite often for me). May you rest in peace and until we all meet again on that great set in the sky, the cellar WAS the safest place! So long pal. Lance J. Reha, Director

Karl,
You were such a wonderful person. While restoring the original NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD both you and Marilyn were there with me every single day during our year(s) long project. But it was all worth it, wasn't it? I'll never forget the love you had for the film and all the people involved with the production and I'm so happy that our friendship was able to continue over the years. You truly were a loving, caring, generous and extremely funny man who could find humor in just about everything. Around you, there never was a dull moment and that's only one of the reasons why you were so great!
Godspeed, Karl. You will be missed.

I started off as a 'fan' and then became a friend to Karl and Marilyn. After working with them on "The Night of the Living Dead 25th Anniversary Documentary," followed by the anti-bullying educational film "Empty Shadows," to which Karl and Marilyn gave themselves and their talents 110% to, I couldn't help but become very close to these good, unselfish and wonderful people. Karl (like Marilyn) was not only an important part of the single greatest horror film of all time, I am proud to say that he was also my friend. He will be sadly missed, but in his work and my heart, he will always be remembered.
J.R. Bookwalter
September 27, 2007
I had the rare pleasure of meeting Karl while producing the NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD 25TH ANNIVERSARY DOCUMENTARY back in 1992. Most of the show was a fun, freestyle roundtable with Karl, co-writer John Russo, producer/actor Russ Streiner and of course, director George A. Romero himself. What a treat it was for a fan like me to see them all together again reminiscing about the film!
Karl and I ran into each other many times over the years at various conventions around the country and I always found him to be a friendly, easy-going guy who really got a kick out of the fact that people still enjoyed his work after all these years. Suffice it to say, nothing like the character for which he'll always be remembered in NOLD. ;-)
My deepest sympathies to Marilyn, Kyra and their family & friends at this time of mourning. The world has lost another one of the great ones, but at least Karl will always live on in our hearts and memories... and of course, in the legendary movie that he was such a big part of, and from which so many filmmakers like myself have been inspired by.

Night Of The Living Dead was such a huge inspiration to me and to many others in the horror film biz. Good thing for all of us that Karl Hardman was here on Earth to contribute so much to such a great film. Though I never knew Karl personally, I do know that he was a great example of someone contributing to the gruesome on screen, but being a kind person of the highest quality in real life. Thank you, Karl, for setting such an example.

Growing up as a close friend to Mrs. E., John, and Mike, I've had the pleasure of knowing Karl very well for the past 35 years. I always was glad to come over the house and see Karl there. His wit and humor never ended. I never knew what voice he was going to use. Every time I saw him he made me laugh, from the time I was a teenager up to and including seeing him dance last year at John and Yvonnes's wedding. I really admired him. He had so much knowledge to share and I always hung on every word he said. I will always be grateful to him for what he taught me in woodworking. Kyra, I'm sorry I never had the pleasure of meeting you. My deepest sympathies go out to you. Your father was a great man. Mrs.E., John, and Mike, you know how sorry I am for your loss. No one can take away the great memories we will always have.

When I met Karl at the 25th NOLD convention in 1993 I could not believe that one of the nicest guys that I have ever met was the same man that for 25 years lived in my thoughts as the ornery character, Harry Cooper. I can't tell you how saddened I am that I will not see him at the 40th anniversary next February. Being a huge horror movie fan, it was great to have him share personal stories about the movie and himself. He truly was a great guy and he will be missed. "night of the living dead" is a story that will be told and re-told forever. karl will always have the distinction of being the original harry cooper, an iconic role in one of the most important american films of a generation. the tension cooper creates in the house is just as intense as, if not more than, the threat outside its walls.

I am so very saddened by this news. Karl was a wonderful man and I am glad to have had the chance to know him and share some time with him. I have to say, I'm really upset about this. He was definitely one of the most fun loving people ever associated with Romero's horror films. Every interview or appearance that he made, he generally larked about or misbehaved. Quite strange that a movie bad guy should turn out to be so sweet really. His cheeky face wont be forgotten and I can only imagine how much of a gap his passing has left, especially for Marilyn and his family. Sleep well, Karl.

Dear, wonderful Karl!! I see your warm, honest smile and hear your hysterical 'Rege Cordic' voices plain as day in my mind. Oh, how you will be missed!

I was deeply saddened to hear about Karl's passing. I'm happy to say I was fortunate enough to be able to meet Karl twice. It was a great pleasure both times. I found him to be kind and extremely generous with his time. My writing partner Amodio and I gave him a copy of a screenplay we had written and he actually took the time to give us some very thoughtful notes on what might make it better. My meetings with him are among my fondest memories. He was a terrific man who made his mark in the industry and who is forever a part of film history. He'll also forever be a part of my history. For that I'll always be greatful.
My deepest condolences to Karl's family. I wish you all the best.

My deepest condlences to the family and friends of Karl Hardman. Though I never had the honor of meeting him in person, I have always admired him. He was by far my favorite character in NOLD, and that film would not have been the same without him on and off the screen. I recently lost my grandfather to the same form of cancer, and I know that this can be very hard on the surviving families. I hope that the knowledged that Mr. Hardman will be missed by many will offer some solace to them and comfort them in their time of grief. May he rest in peace.

Karl Hardman was like a father to me. He has been by my side and my husband's side through better and worse. I have had the great pleasure of knowing Karl for 37 years this month. I also managed his company,Hardman Associates and later Hardman Eastman Studios for many of those years. My husband, Murray & I will never forget the day in '96 when Karl gave me away at our wedding. The last thing Murray and I have to remember was this past Christmas at our house when Karl said his famous line with a French accent..."Let's have some champagne." Yes, let's all toast to a marvelous and generous man. May peace be with Marilyn,Kyra,J.B. & family, Mike & family. You are all in our thoughts and prayers. Love, Barb and Murray Black
