Obituary Condolences

Donna M. Chase, a longtime resident of Point Breeze, died peacefully on May 10, 2010 from complications from acute leukemia. Donna taught at Shady Lane School for the past 18 years and prior to that served as the Assistant Director of the Three Rivers Arts Festival for many years. At Shady Lane School, Donna was one of the pioneers of the inclusive classroom that brought together children of varying abilities and disabilities. She used art and nature to open to her students a world that sought to integrate nature, science, and personal expression. What made her a stellar teacher was her passion for teaching and her students. Donna was an avid gardener, renown for her wildflower and monarch butterfly gardens. Although she was a seasoned international traveler, what she most relished was being with family and friends, and her summers in the Adirondacks. Born in Jersey City in 1949, she graduated with a degree in Art Education from William Paterson University before moving to Pittsburgh. She is survived by her husband and best friend, William Chase, their sons, Matthew and Alex, her mother, Claire Schaefer, her sisters, Marybarbara Zorio and Theresa Schaefer-Ryan, her brother, Mark Schaefer, and Glenna. Friends will be received at JOHN A. FREYVOGEL SONS INC. 4900 Centre Avenue at Devonshire Street (412-621-1665) on Thursday May 13 from 2-4 and 6-9PM. Funeral Friday, Mass of Christian Burial, St. Bede Church (509 South Dallas Avenue, Pgh.,PA 15208) at 11AM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Shady Lane School, 100 North Braddock Ave, Pittsburgh 15208 for a scholarship fund in Donna's memory.
