Obituary Condolences

Age 96, long time resident of Highland Park, on Sat., Feb. 4, after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife, Jeanne; three children, Richard (Nancy) Shaffer of Washington, Maria (David Gordon) Shaffer-Gordon of Pittsburgh, and Guy (Pamela DeMayo) Shaffer of Colorado; three grandchildren, John, Daniel, and Grace Shaffer; four great- grandchildren, and numerous nephews and nieces. He was the son of Chauncey and Claire (McCracken) Shaffer. Born in Warsaw Township, PA, he grew up in a small lumber town in Washington state. After graduating from Washington State College, with a BS in electrical engineering in 1936, he moved to Pittsburgh to begin a long, successful career as a professional electrical engineer, working at Swindell-Dressler, Sargent Electric, Auburn & Associates, Dravo, and Cintar. He was a railroad buff (both real and model trains), who also enjoyed photography, travelling, collecting US stamps, and building electronics (including a color TV and his first computer), and he shared these activities with his children, many of his nephews, and his son-in-law. In addition to his family, one of his greatest joys was growing vegetables and fruit trees in his garden in Vandergrift, which were enjoyed by the local wildlife. He is remembered by his many family and friends as an exceptionally kind and generous man who would go out of his way to help others, but never wanted to impose on anyone else for anything, with the possible exception of his sister-in-law Marie's fruit pies. In lieu of a memorial service, a celebration of life will be held at a future date, to be determined. Those wishing to make a donation in John's memory are requested to consider Vintage, 401 N. Highland Ave. Pittsburgh, PA 15206 or the Meals on Wheels program at East End Cooperative Ministry, 250 N. Highland Ave. Pittsburgh, PA 15206. Family requests that people pay their respects to Jeanne at the Vincentian de Marillac Nursing Home, 5300 Stanton Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15206.
