Age 95, of Longwood at Oakmont, formerly of Indiana Township, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 24, 2013. He was the husband of the late Betty Michel Armstrong; father of James M. (Janet) of Brackenridge, George B. of Adams Township, Sandra A. (Lyle) Johnston of New Wilmington, and Peter S. (Christine) of Wayland, MA; grandfather of seven and great-grandfather of five; brother of the late Robert Armstrong and Mary Hamilton. Jim was a graduate of Shadyside Academy and Franklin & Marshall College. During WWII, he served in the Army Corps of Engineers, being on Oahu during the attack on Pearl Harbor. He worked for the Armour Meat Company, as credit manager for National Supply Company and Joy Manufacturing Corporation, as business manager for the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, and as manager of Lodgegrass Farms. He was an active member of Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church, serving as elder and trustee. He had been a member of the University Club of Pittsburgh, the Fox Chapel Rotary Club and the City Farmers Club of Pittsburgh. He enjoyed tennis, alpine skiing and fly fishing. Friends will be received 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 3 at WEDDELL - AJAK FUNERAL HOME, 100 Center Avenue, Aspinwall. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 4 in the Ballroom at Longwood at Oakmont, 500 Route 909 (Coxcomb Hill Road), Plum Boro. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorial contributions to Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church, 384 Fox Chapel Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15238 or the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation, One Children's Hospital Drive, 4401 Penn Avenue, Central Plant, Floor 3, Pittsburgh, PA 15224.
