Advertising Executive, Herb Gordon, whose advertising career spanned 44 years, died on May 4, 2013 in Pittsburgh at the age of 74. In 1965, he started his advertising agency career as a trainee at Ketchum, MacLeod & Grove, Pittsburgh, PA, which became Ketchum Communications Inc. He rose through the ranks of the advertising division, becoming senior vice president media services and president of the yellow pages division. He left Ketchum in 1969 to join Frye-Sills Inc., a Denver, CO, ad agency as media director, then returned to Ketchum Communications executive committee and board of directors. In 1991, he became president and CEO of the Association of Directory Marketing (ADM), a yellow pages marketing organization. He was a member of the board of directors of ADM, Yellow Pages and Association of Directory Publishers. In 1998, Directory World Magazine named Gordon one of "The most influential people in the yellow pages industry". He retired in June 2009. As a U.S. Air Force Atlas Missile Launch Officer from 1960-65, he was a member of the country's first inter-continental ballistic missile unit (ICBM) unit, the 389th Missile Wing, Cheyenne, WY. Herb was a graduate of Tufts University and the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School. A native of Massachusetts, Herb was born in Medford in 1938 and grew up in Somerville. He was the youngest of four children. In 2001, he survived throat cancer after surgery and treatments. Herb was a former director of Valley Care Association, and served on the community relations committee of Sewickley Valley Hospital. He was the past chairman of the board of Business Publications Audit, a board member of Audit Bureau of Circulations and Western PA Jr. Achievement. He was a guest lecturer in advertising and marketing at the University of Pittsburgh. He played tennis and bridge, was a vegetable gardener and enjoyed World War II history, a member of the Duquesne Club and Edgeworth Club. He is survived by his wife, the former Annemarie Martin; sons, Michael Gordon (Anna) of Plano, TX, Chris and Stephen Boles, both of Pittsburgh; grandfather of Erin, Shane, Ryan, Jacob, Jarod, Justin, Aislinn, David, and Carly; brother of Ruth Ellis of Escondido, CA and Eleanor Gibb of Springfield, MA. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2013, 11:00 a.m. at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 801 Beaver St. Sewickley. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Salvation Army, 700 N. Bell Ave., Carnegie, PA 15106 or the , 320 Bilmar Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15205.
