DAVID H., JR., M.D.
Age 87, of Duluth, GA, passed away, Saturday, February 1, 2014. Dr. Rhodes, son of Dr. David H. and Mary Kelso Rhodes, was born January 16, 1927 in Pittsburgh. He grew up in McKeesport, graduating from McKeesport High School in 1945, the same year he was drafted into the Navy. He served on the USS Appalachian until 1947. After serving in the Navy, Dr. Rhodes attended the University of Pittsburgh and graduated in 1949. After college Dr. Rhodes attended the University Of Pittsburgh School Of Medicine, graduating in 1953. He completed his residency in Ophthalmology at the Edward Harkness Eye Institute at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology in 1959. Following in his father's footsteps, Dr. Rhodes had a distinguished 50 year career specializing in neuro-ophthalmology, optical diseases and surgery while practicing in Pittsburgh. He served on the medical staffs of Mercy Hospital, St. Francis Hospital and St. Margaret's Hospital. From 1980 -1994, he was the Chief of the Division of Ophthalmology at Mercy Hospital. In 1994, Dr. Rhodes joined the Everett & Hurite Ophthalmic Association where he practiced until his retirement in May 2008. Active in teaching, Dr. Rhodes was a clinical assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and co-authored, with Deryk Duncalf, the book Anesthesia in Clinical Ophthalmology. Perhaps more important than his professional accomplishments, Dr. Rhodes was known for his compassionate care and generosity of his time and talent in serving others. He was married to Claire Large Rhodes from December 23, 1950 until her death July 29 1976. He was married to Jolene Miller Rhodes from May 21, 1977 until her death June 30, 2005. Dr. Rhodes is survived by his son, David H. Rhodes, III, daughter-in-law, Gretchen, granddaughter, Christy Machak and her husband David, and great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Claire; granddaughter, Katie Matthews and her husband, Jeff and great-grandson, Nathaniel; son, Rev. Paul Large Rhodes, daughter-in-law, Nancy, grandsons, Pete and Misha; son, Thomas E. Rhodes and daughter-in-law, Marilyn (Sam) and grandsons, Ted and David; sisters, Mary Jane Wilson of Beaver, PA and her husband, Rev. Dr. William Wilson, and Helen Hunt Smith of W. Lafayette, IN and her husband Don; brother-in-law, Dr. Michael Hunt; as well as nieces and nephews. Before moving to Georgia in 2009, Dr. Rhodes raised his family in Fox Chapel and lived in Aspinwall. For years, Dr. Rhodes actively served as a Sunday School teacher and elder at the First Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh. He loved to sail, especially on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. The family will receive friends Wednesday, February 5, 2014 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the WEDDELL - AJAK FUNERAL HOME, 100 Center Ave., Aspinwall. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 6, 2014 at the First Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh, 320 Sixth Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15222. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Ligonier Camp and Conference Center, 188 Macartney Lane, Ligonier, PA 15658.
