PAUL REIBER Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 9 to Apr. 10, 2016.
REIBER PAUL L., Jr.
Age 93, died peacefully April 7, 2016, at Good Samaritan Hospice Wexford, PA with family by his side. Paul was born on August 22, 1922, in Pittsburgh, PA, son of Paul L. Reiber, Sr. and Adelaide Succop Reiber. He graduated from Peabody High School, East Liberty, PA where he was President of his Senior Class. He entered Lehigh University in 1940. While at Lehigh Paul was President of Beta Theta Pi, a member of the national honorary engineering society and worked between semesters in the foundry at the Bethlehem Steel mill. In 1944 Paul joined the war effort, responding to a request to join a Defense Department research project for which he earned recognition and honor. After graduation he joined US Steel, and then Union Carbide working in their international division as a Manager in the New York City, London and Geneva offices. At one point Paul lost the coin toss and he and his wife Esta moved first to Harpenden, Hertfordshire outside of London, then Geneva, Switzerland for a total ten years. In their lives overseas Paul and Esta made many, many friends. Paul married Esta Winfield Judy, who he met through his twin sister, MaryLou. Paul and Esta were married at the First Presbyterian Church, Mt. Lebanon 1944. Together they raised five children in homes across the northeast and England. As a young couple, before they moved to England Paul and Esta built a summer cottage in the Outer Banks, a place that became a retreat for children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family and friends. Their steady focus on that place, together with cousin Ruth Succop next door, was the importance of staying in touch. He particularly enjoyed in recent years reunions at the beach, thumbing his nose at fate, out of his wheel chair propped up by strong grandsons taking on the waves. Throughout his life he made his mark with everyone he met, a servant to the everlasting warmth of the human spirit as evoked by his beloved Bach and the Bach Choir Bethlehem where he performed or attended the St. Mathew Passion the Choir presents every spring. Paul was preceded in death by his wife and the mother of their five children, Esta Judy Reiber who died on February 8, 1998. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Pflasterer Reiber of Mt. Lebanon, PA; and by his five children, Judy of Minneapolis, MN, Paul III and his wife, Sandi of Chittenden, VT, Charles and his wife, Diana of Grand Junction, CO, Thomas and his wife, Kaye of Portersville, PA, and Robert and his wife, Mary of Lincoln, VT. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren, Amanda, Abe, Alex, Nathan, Holly, Chad, Irish, Cybelle, Lee, Auti, Kim, Ashley, Abbi, Chip, and Anne; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; four stepchildren, Linda Sue Boehmer, James Pflasterer, Tom Pflasterer and Nancy Haughton; and nine step- grandchildren. The family would like to thank the staff at Concordia of the South Hills for the warm, compassionate care and respect shown Paul during his final months. There will be a memorial service at Christ United Methodist, Bethel Park, PA on Tuesday at 10 a.m. For more information please call 724-941-3211. Please accept my condolences, and my apologies that I was unable to attend the memorial service. I only met Mr. Reiber a few times, but he was always friendly and full of life.

Dear Judy, Tom, Paul, Chuck and Rob, I knew your dad for about twelve years. From the time we met to the last time I saw him, last Friday, he always had a kind and positive word to say to me. He was the most positive person I had ever been around. My favorite times were when Amanda and I lived in Minneapolis, Dottie and Paul would call us about every 10 days or so and want to talk about the Buccos. We had some great conversations and his true love for Baseball was second to none. I absolutely loved it and always felt better after his calls. He always asked me how my kids were doing and what else was going on in our lives. I was so happy when my kids got to meet him and Dottie in 2007. Getting to spend time with him this last year was very special to me and I am a better person for it. From Amanda, Nicky, Joey, Henry and I, we will always have a place in our hearts for Paul. He will truly be missed.
