CARL A.
Age 84, of Mt. Lebanon, passed away August 24, 2016. Beloved husband of Elizabeth and loving father of Beverly Hammer of Towson, Maryland and William Bergmann of Arlington, Virginia. Father-in- law of Stacy Bergmann and Seth Hammer. He had three grandchildren, Emma, Carly and Isabelle; two step- grandchildren, Ana and Christina; and numerous nieces and nephews. Michael and Sylvia Moran were his cherished in-laws. He was born in Concordia, Missouri, son of Clara and Theodore Bergmann and sibling to the late Robert Bergmann, Ruth Heilman, and Julia Schmich. He obtained a degree in Chemical Engineering from University of Missouri and an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh. After graduating, he spent four years in the United States Air Force, achieving the rank of Captain. In the Air Force, he became part of the cold war technical team attempting to develop a nuclear powered aircraft, and subsequently spent most of his career at Westinghouse Electric where he was involved with nuclear reactor coolant chemistry and reducing radiation buildup. He authored several publications on reducing occupational radiation exposure and was a leading authority on reactor coolant chemistry. He had an adventurous time visiting nuclear plants around the world and traveling with his wife on vacation. He was an early founder of the Unitarian Universalist Church of the South Hills and spent many enriching and happy years in its service in various capacities. Most recently he was involved with the planning of the renovation of the church building. Due to the renovation, a memorial service for him will be held on Sunday, September 4, 2016, at 2 p.m., in the Bower Hill Community Church, 70 Moffett Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15243.
