DR. GEORGE CARL SCHMIELER Obituary
SCHMIELER DR. GEORGE CARL
of Canonsburg passed away Wednesday, September 14, 2016. He was born June 12, 1936, son of George Peter Schmieler and Carolyn Koeberlein Schmieler in Baltimore, MD. He was the beloved husband of Elizabeth Sroka Schmieler, loving father of George Carl, Debra Lynn, and Eric Jeffrey, loving grandfather of Amanda and Travis. He was the caring brother of Jeffrey R. Schmieler of Silver Spring, MD, and Diane S. Lewis of Portland, NY. He leaves behind many nieces and nephews as well as numerous dear friends. Dr. Schmieler was raised in the Canonsburg area, moving to Peters Township in the 5th grade. After graduating from Peters Township High School, he attended the University of Maryland where he received his Bachelor of Science in 1958. He then received his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1962, where he also received the honor of entering the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. From there, he completed his internship at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore Maryland, and later completed his training while serving as a Captain in the United States Air Force from 1963-65. He conducted private practice as a family physician from 1965-1974, and was board certified by the American Board of Family Practice. From there he went on to have an incredibly influential career, fulfilling roles such as plant physician for McGraw-Edison Power Systems, medical director of the Washington Hospital Occupational Medical Center, medical director of the Washington Hospital Employee Health Services, director as well as founder of the Washington Hospital Family Practice Residency Program. He also served on the board of the directors for the Washington County Medical Society, board of trustees for the Industrial Health Foundation, clinical assistant professor for the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Pennsylvania State University, and president of the Washington County Medical Society in 1983 and 1992. In addition to these career accomplishments, he had a great love for the outdoors - never missing a traditional family hiking trip to Skyline Drive, VA since he was 17 years old. He enjoyed nothing more than spending time with his family and friends. Dr. Schmieler retired in 2011, and will always be remembered for his commitment to his patients, colleagues, healthcare, and family. His sense of humor and practical joking, as well as his kindness, compassion, and generosity will be truly missed by all who knew him. A role model and friend to so many, he will be loved and remembered forever. Funeral arrangements by BEINHAUERS.
