SCHATZ
VIRGINIA LOUISE (WRIGHT)
Peacefully on September 22, 2017 at the venerable age of 96. She was born in Philadelphia on February 21, 1921, the second eldest of five children to Helen Frances Davis and George Forest Wright. After attending Albright College for one year, she enrolled in the School of Music at Carnegie Institute of Technology, from which she graduated in 1943. It was there that she met her husband, Edward R. Schatz, who also received his degrees from the Institute and became a member of the faculty, and then later served in the administration of Carnegie Mellon University until his death in 1996.Upon graduation, Virginia went overseas during WWII with the Red Cross, after which she returned to Pittsburgh to marry and teach music in the Pittsburgh Public Schools. In 1959, she began a long association with the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf, teaching music and movement, and incorporating the practice of Dalcroze Eurhythmics into deaf education. An accomplished pianist and soprano, she also taught piano privately, and sung in and led junior choirs at Edgewood and Shadyside Presbyterian churches throughout her professional career. Virginia was an enthusiastic promoter of all things "Pittsburgh", and a particularly generous supporter of many Pittsburgh institutions and charities, including Carnegie Mellon University, the Phipps Conservatory, the Carnegie Museums, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Shadyside Presbyterian Church, and the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf, among many others. She is survived by her daughter, Eleanor S. Magyar (David) of Edgewood; her son, George E. Schatz (Cathryn L. Goodwin) of Princeton, NJ; her two granddaughters, Rebecca Magyar (Tom Pfister) of London, UK, with a great- grandchild on the way, Rachel G. Schatz of New York, NY; and two siblings, Helen Carol Irvine in Visala, CA and Pat Scipio in Lake Forest, CA. There will be no visitation and interment next to her beloved husband in Johnstown, PA is private. Remembrances in her name may be made to the Edward R. and Virginia W. Schatz Fund for Scholars at Carnegie Mellon University, to the Phipps Conservatory, or a charity of choice. Arrangements by JOHN A. FREYVOGEL SONS, INC.

Virginia was one of the dearest and sweetest women I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. My first job at CMU was being a temp in her husband's office when he was Provost. Every time I saw her, she remembered that! A great loss of a great woman. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Virginia was a truly dedicated teacher, motivator and encourager . She inspired me in my early formative teaching years and had a tremendous amount of respect for her. My condolences to the family. If Virginia could be cloned, Deaf Education would be stronger. What a gift!

As have many other organizations, Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity has lost one of its brightest lights. Virginia was a dedicated and well-loved supporter of all things musical, and the SAI alumnae chapter was fortunate to have had her enthusiastic guidance and support. Thank you, Virginia. Rest in peace.

I worked with Virginia for only a short time as her concierge at the Pittsburgh Symphony, but I feel so fortunate for having met her. She was a joy to talk to, I truly enjoyed every time I got to speak to her. She will be deeply missed by the Pittsburgh Symphony, and the world.
