HAROLD RICHARD "CURLY"
On Wednesday, August 28, 2002, former football great, age 85 of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, formerly of Pittsburgh; husband of Anne Cellurale Stebbins; brother of Eldon M. Stebbins of Ocala, FL, Lester H. Stebbins of Williamsport, PA and Benjamin D. Stebbins of Mechanicsburg, PA. Mr. Stebbins graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1939 and was a member of the dream backfield under Jock Sutherland, along with Marshall Goldberg, Dick Cassiano and John Chikerneo. He starred in the 1937 Rose Bowl game when Pittsburgh was national champion and was selected to play in the East/West as well as the All Star game in 1939. Mr. Stebbins was assistant coach at the University of Florida in 1939 and 1940 and assistant coach at the University of Pittsburgh in 1941 and 1942. He enlisted in the Navy in 1942, commissioned Ensign, and was honorably discharged in 1945 as Lt. Senior Grade. Mr. Stebbins worked in sales for the athletic division of Johnson and Johnson and moved on to become Vice President of Vic Maitland and Associates, the national marketing firm. He moved to Florida in 1971 and worked for the Broward County Court House before retiring. Friends may call Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 pm at H. SAMSON, INC. 537 N. Neville Street, Oakland. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday 10:30 am in St. Paul Cathedral. Entombment St. Clair Cemetery, Greensburg.www.hsamsoninc.com
