Grant Nelson(1958 - 2014)

Grant Nelson, 55, of Idaho Falls, passed away Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014, from a brain tumor.

He was born March 2, 1958, in Montpelier, Idaho, the son of R.K. and Leone Davis Nelson. He farmed until graduating from Bear Lake High School and serving an LDS mission in London, England.

Grant met the love of his life, Cheryl Maynes, and they married in the Manti LDS Temple on Aug. 15, 1980. They were blessed with seven children and formed special friendships while living in Cache Valley, Utah; and Oakley, Pocatello, Kimberly, Idaho Falls, St. Anthony and Rexburg, Idaho.

Grant attended Ricks College and graduated with a bachelor's degree in agricultural education from Utah State University in 1982 and a master's degree in adult education from the University of Idaho in 2002.

He taught for a year at Oakley High School and returned to Cache Valley to manage a feed mill and dairy. In 1987, he joined First Security Bank/Wells Fargo, and recently became manager of business banking in eastern Idaho.

Grant was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and influenced many people while serving as bishop, temple worker, high counselor, clerk, High Priest Group leader, Scoutmaster and Sunday school instructor.

He strived to make a better community by volunteering in many civic organizations including: United Way, Rotary Club, 4-H, Boy Scouts, education foundations, Fremont/Madison Cattlemen's Association and East Central Idaho Planning and Development Association (ECIPDA).

Grant enjoyed spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren, teaching, farming, hiking, cross-country skiing, spelunking, running and dog sledding.

Grant is survived by his wife, Cheryl Nelson of Idaho Falls; children, K (Meggan) Nelson of Pasco, Wash., Vanessa (Justin) Beard of Rexburg, Kyle Nelson of Pocatello, Wayne (Amanda) Nelson of Palmdale, Calif., Dawna (James) Terry of Salt Lake City, Jill Nelson of Idaho Falls and Robert Nelson of Idaho Falls; 11 grandchildren; 11 brothers, Bill, John, Tom, K, Lee, Dan, Mark, Paul and Scott Nelson, and Gary and Don Palmer; and 10 sisters, Ann Jenson, Roma Thompson, Jean Hunter, Marie Johnson, Donna Warnock, Linda Jennings, Mary Ann Manning, Lola Hammel, Judith Long and Beth Ng.

His parents, two brothers and five sisters preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12, at the Idaho Falls LDS Brentwood Ward, 2040 Brentwood Drive, with Bishop Clay Murdoch officiating. A viewing will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday night from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home, 273 N. Ridge Ave., and from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Wednesday prior to services at the church. Burial will be in Sutton Cemetery in Archer.
