Joyce Luke

Joyce Furness Luke, 91, passed away Tuesday, July 23, 2013, at her home in Sugar City.

Joyce was born in Sugar City on April 9, 1922, to Tobias Furness and Lucy Ricks Furness. She attended school in Sugar City and graduated from Sugar-Salem High School, where she participated in orchestra, choir, pep band and pep club.

Joyce attended Ricks College and later graduated from Utah State University with her teaching degree. She taught school in Sugar City for 25 years, 22 of those years as a first- grade teacher.

She married Floyd Luke in Hobbs, N.M., where Floyd was serving in the military, on May 30, 1944. The marriage was solemnized in the Logan temple three months later. Four children joined the family: Richard, Layne, Laurie and Chad.

Following retirement, Floyd and Joyce served a mission in Long Beach, Calif., working with the Cambodian branch. They served in the Idaho Falls Temple for 9 1/2 years. Joyce served in many church callings throughout her life, especially in the Young Women and Relief Society organizations.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; her three brothers, Jay, Rex and Hal Furness; her husband; and her son, Richard.

She is survived by children, Layne (Judy) Luke of Sugar City, Laurie (Jorge) Orduo of Sugar City and Chad Luke of Utah; daughter-in-law, Lola Ann Luke (Willis) Blaine of Rexburg; Tom and Nina Liau of Texas; 13 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, at the Sugar 2nd Ward (Gray church). The family will receive friends from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16, at Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg, and again from noon to 12:45 p.m. Saturday prior to services at the church. Interment will be in Sugar City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, Joyce requested that donations be made to the Church Missionary Fund of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
