Tommie J. Brown, 82, of Idaho Falls, passed away Wednesday, July 24, 2013, at Bonaventure Place Retirement Community surrounded by his loved ones. He was under the care of Encompass Hospice.
Tommie was born Aug. 10, 1930, in Iona to Lorenzo Dee Brown and Josephine Young Brown. He spent his childhood years in Iona and attended Iona Elementary School. He father passed away in 1941, and he moved to Alpine, Wyo., to live with his sister and attended sixth through eighth grades there.
On Nov. 18, 1947, he joined the U.S. Navy and served his country as a captain's corollary, running fire drills on ships and working on plane carburetors during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged Nov. 17, 1951.
On Nov. 29, 1949, he married Pearl Elizabeth Foster in Iona, and they made their home in Roberts. To this union were born five children: Daniel, Margo, Kenneth, Lorna and Montie. Tommie worked as a farmer, miner for Silver Moon Mine and at Idaho Travertine. He and Pearl had lived in Idaho Falls for 50 years when she passed away Dec. 11, 2012.
He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He enjoyed carving things out of blocks of wood, fishing, hunting and riding horses.
Tommie is survived by his sons, Daniel Martin (Cora) Brown of Golden, Colo., Kenneth Farrin Brown of Idaho Falls and Montie Joe (Tina) Brown of Ririe; daughters, Margo Elizabeth Rader and Lorna Lorraine Tonks, both of Idaho Falls; brothers, Garth Brown of Idaho Falls and Harold "Hank" Brown of Las Vegas; 27 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a son-in-law, Perry E. Tonks; a great-grandson, Teegan Freid; a great-granddaughter, Tiaunna Dougan; five sisters, Marion Butte, Myra Tarquinio, Bonnie Schlie, Bertha Keller and Rachael McGregor; and a brother, Lorn Bert Brown.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, July 27, at Iona Cemetery, with Wayne Siddoway officiating. The family will visit with friends from 1 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. Saturday at Wood Funeral Home East Side, 963 S. Ammon Road. Burial will be in Iona Cemetery. Military rites will be performed by the Bonneville County Veterans Memorial Team and Idaho Honor Guard.
