Valene Klamt

Valene Klamt, 92, passed away Thursday, June 13, 2013, in Boise. She had struggled with Alzheimer's dementia for many years. We know she is at peace.

Valene was born to Dewey and Pearl Skinner on September 11, 1920, in Soda Springs, Idaho. She attended grade school in Conda, Idaho, and graduated valedictorian from Soda Springs High School in May 1938.

In June 1940, she received an Associate of Arts Degree from the University of Idaho, Southern Branch, where she met her future husband, Bob Klamt.

Upon her graduation, Valene spent two years in Washington D.C. as personal secretary to the Chief of the U.S. Children's Bureau.

She returned to Idaho and married Bob on April 2, 1943. Bob's service in the Navy and pursuit of a Doctor of Medicine degree took them first to Farragut, Idaho, where Bob was a pharmacist's mate and Valene was secretary to the Officer in Charge of Medical Records; then to Helena, Mont.; Omaha, Neb.; and Naval Station Long Beach, Calif., where Bob completed his internship as physician and surgeon.

All the while, Valene kept the home-fires burning. She learned to drive with three little kids in the backseat while Bob was on a ship in the Pacific during the Korean War.

Valene and Bob settled in St. Anthony, where Bob practiced medicine and Valene was active in many local organizations while raising four kids. They moved to Ukiah, Calif., in 1969, where Bob completed a residency in psychiatry, and then on to Modesto, Calif., where he practiced psychiatry.

Valene was very active in the art community in both Ukiah and Modesto. An avid reader, she also participated in book clubs. She enjoyed gardening and gourmet cooking as well, and was an excellent partner to Bob at the card table and on the dance floor.

Mom enjoyed art in any form, but her specialty was oil painting. Walls in the homes of her many friends and family are graced with her paintings. Mom was an excellent cook and was known for the table she set. She enjoyed entertaining and we enjoyed her hospitality.

She and Dad traveled extensively outside of the U.S. as well as across the States. They were very fond of taking their trailer to Cave Falls campground, 36 miles east of their final resting place, for several weeks each summer, where they hosted family and friends and did some Dutch oven cooking. While Dad would fish, Mom would pick huckleberries for our pancakes, find the perfect wildflowers to press, sit by the river reading a book or play gin rummy with her daughter.

After retirement, Mom and Dad lived for several years in Bear Valley, Calif., then moved to Eagle, Idaho, where they made their last home and continued to enjoy outdoor activities, entertaining and many long-term friendships.

Valene is survived by her children, Tina Klamt of Boise, Dianna Klamt and husband Jon Lough of McCall, Idaho, Bob Klamt and wife Jackie of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Joe Klamt of Meridian, Idaho; grandchildren, Christopher Eaton and wife Jen Hopkins of Boise, Joe Klamt of Nampa, Jocielyne Klamt of Nampa and Adrienne Klamt of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; and great-granddaughters, Aleksus Klamt of Nampa and Zooey Eaton of Boise.

Valene was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 65 years, Dr. Bob Klamt.

Private graveside services were held at Pineview Cemetery in Ashton.

We extend our thanks to Paramount Parks for the great care Mom received when she lived there a few years after Dad passed away. We extend our thanks to Horizon Hospice for their attention and wonderful care of Mom and their consideration of the family's needs. We extend a special thank you and gratitude to the staff at Overland Court Memory Care for their excellent, loving and attentive care of Mom in her final difficult years. You are forever in our hearts.

We ask if you are moved, donations are made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America online at, or by mail at 322 8th Ave. 7th Floor, New York, NY 10001.
