Grant X. Moedl, 57, was born to Raymond Moedl and Ruth Wright Moedl on June 9, 1953, in Rexburg, Idaho, and passed away March 2, 2011, in Elmore County, Idaho.
Grant was a gentle, kind, understated man with a great love of family, friends and the outdoors.
Grant was an accomplished climber and skilled outdoorsman. He possessed a passionate love for the mountains of Idaho, especially the Teton Range. He climbed the Grand Teton 38 times during his lifetime, plus one near-fatal ascent on a stormy New Year's Eve in 1986. He also climbed extensively in the Wind River Range, Joshua Tree, Mexico (Pico de Orizaba), Alaska and Yosemite, including Half-Dome and El Capitan. He loved to nordic, backcountry and alpine ski. He tenderly cared about his ailing mother, Ruth, until her death last September at age 93. He was loyal, true and utterly devoted to his family.
Did Grant inspire you to be more selfless? To strive to be a more devoted son? A more attentive father? Did you see something new in the mountains, rocks and wildflowers after hiking with him? Did you chat with him about his adventures and become drawn in by his quiet stories and his passion for nature? Does his gentle laugh resound in your ears? It was Grant's joy to share the beauty and adventure he experienced with you.
Grant proposed to Kathleen Mackay in July 1972 on top of the Grand Teton, and they were married in the Los Angeles LDS Temple on September 8, 1973. Over 37 years, Grant and Kathy built a life together based on their shared passions and interests. They climbed and camped together, worked title together around the United States and, after 21 years of marriage, were blessed with the birth of Alexandra X. Moedl. Alex was the greatest reward of Grant's life. She wears his smile and carries his legacy of kindness.
Grant is survived by his loving wife and daughter; a brother, Don (Karen) Moedl of Ft. Mohave, Arizona; and sisters, LuJean Warnick of Moreland, Idaho, Joyce (Kyle) Dayley of Rigby, Idaho, and Shirlee (Lynn) Webster of Lyman, Idaho.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Ruth.
Grant will be warmly remembered by his and Kathy's large extended family, the Rexburg community, the Idaho Title Industry, especially the First American family, and his rock-hounding friends and associates.
Kathy and Alex wish to thank the Rexburg Police Department, the Elmore County Sheriff's Office, Elmore County Search and Rescue, devoted friends Blair and Marjorie Rich who organized the search effort, hundreds of search volunteers across the Hwy. 20 corridor of Idaho, Richard and Kay Holliday, and over 1,100 online Facebook friends who followed the search, made suggestions, shared information and offered support.
Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday, July 2, 2011, at the LDS Rexburg North Stake Center, 314 E. Second North. Interment will be at Rexburg Cemetery. Family will meet with friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, July 1, at Flamm Funeral Home, 61 N. First East, and one hour prior to funeral services at the Stake Center.
Condolences may be sent to the family at www.flammfh.com.

I associated with Grant when I worked in Teton County. He was a gentleman in the truest sense. Each time we spoke he mentioned his family or some wilderness excursion he went on. I'm grateful we all have closure now after these last several suspenseful months. Best wishes, Moedl family!

This world is a little be lesser for the passing of Grant, but so much the greater for his having been in it. He inspires me to be a better, kinder, more loving person and to show charity for all. He is the type of person never to be forgotten and always to be held as a role model and standard for humanity.
