Charles A. Scoresby Obituary

Charles Alma Scoresby, 77, lifelong resident of Iona, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012, following a courageous battle with prostate and bone cancer. He was under the care of his loving family and the caring staff at The Gables of Ammon.

Charles was born Nov. 28, 1934, in Idaho Falls to Clifford Norman Scoresby and Johanna L. Horman Scoresby. He attended school in Iona and graduated from Bonneville High School.

He married Sherry Mae Hansen on Nov. 10, 1966, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. They made their home on the Scoresby family farm east of Iona, where they farmed and ranched and taught their family the value of hard work.

As an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Charles served in various capacities, including a proselytizing mission to Australia, counselor in the bishopric, executive secretary, Sunday school president, church facilities coordinator and as a dedicated home teacher.

Charles enjoyed working the land. He was a masterful farmer and had a working knowledge of this area's water system that will be sorely missed. He was meticulous about his fieldwork and made the straightest dikes. He could often be seen on a summer's day changing water with a shovel in his hands.

Charles built his cattle herd from just a few head. He loved sending them to the hills every spring and bringing them home every fall. He had an eye for cattle that stamped his herd. Neighbors will miss Charles' roadside conversations, as he always made time to visit with friends.

Survivors include his daughters, Debra Mae (Anthony) Palmer of Idaho Falls, Brenda Scoresby of Iona and Linda Marie Leigh Ann Scoresby of Iona; sons, Clifford Charles (Mandi Pickett) Scoresby of Iona, Royce Alma (Megan Stewart) Scoresby of Roseville, Calif., and Owen Martel (Jamie Johnson) Scoresby of Ucon; sisters, Fern Benson of Rigby, Leah Thacker of Phoenix, Mary Lou Rindlisbacher of Logan, Utah, and Marilyn Sargent of Iona; brothers, Fred Scoresby of Rexburg, Harold Scoresby of Idaho Falls and John Scoresby of Idaho Falls; and 15 grandchildren, William, Johanna, Jacqueline, Spencer, Emily, Kayla, Kourtney, Jacob, Kaliann, Evan, Blake, Addison, Timmy, Todd and Kade.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; brothers, Delbert Scoresby and Clifford William "Bill" Scoresby; sister-in-law, Afton Harker Scoresby; and brother-in-law, Lynn Benson.

The family wishes to express a heartfelt thankyou to those who lovingly cared for Charles at Promontory Point Rehabilitation Center, The Gables of Ammon, Creekside Home Health, and through Hearts of Hospice.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 15, at the Iona LDS 2nd Ward, 7555 N. 55th East, with Bishop Byard Cox officiating. The family will visit with friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Wood Funeral Home East Side, 963 S. Ammon Road, and from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Monday prior to services at the church. Interment will be in Iona Cemetery.
