Dennis Leroy Barney Obituary

Dennis Leroy Barney was born June 15, 1942, in Idaho Falls to the late Lamond Barney and Dorothy May Wilson. He passed this earthly test early in the morning Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, in Roseville, Calif. He was 71 years old.

During a visit to Idaho Falls, from his home in Sacramento in June, he suffered a stroke and learned that cancer was his enemy. His Idaho family surrounded him then and his Sacramento family took over from there. Memories and tender mercies were in place, and his loss is huge. He will be dearly missed and forever loved.

Dennis was the face of Sacramento's country music scene throughout the 1970s and 1980s, being voted best new male vocalist for several years in the Sacramento area. His band, Dennis Barney and the Nashville Rebels, toured nightclubs and casinos throughout the West. His talent was recognized with many awards, radio and TV appearances. His talent as a songwriter was recognized by several country music legends, including Merle Haggard, who recorded some of the music Dennis wrote.

Dennis began his singing and music career in the Idaho Falls area, playing many times at the old Golden Jamboree. Jamming with old friends when he visited Idaho was always on his agenda, and it meant the world to him to see and visit old friends and family.

Dennis is survived by many loving family members and friends, including his stepmother, Virginia; half sisters, Laura, Rose and Rita, all of Sacramento; his brother, Merrill (Cheryl) Barney of St. George; and half brothers and sister, Terry and Kevin (Sandi) Bolinder of Firth and Belinda (Bill) Tolley of Rigby.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lamond Barney; his mother, Dorothy May Wilson Bolinder; stepfather, William Bolinder; and a son, Dennis Barney Jr.

Friends are invited to attend memorial services at noon Thursday, Feb. 20, at River Cities Funeral Chapel, 910 Soule St. in West Sacramento.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Cancer Research Institute.
