Harold R. Herndon Obituary

Harold Raymond Herndon, 89, of Idaho Falls, passed away at his residence Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013, in Idaho Falls.

He was born in Cheyenne Wells, Colo., on May 18, 1924, the son and fourth child of Ora Lester and Edith Mildred Vroman Herndon. After the dust storms, he and his par- ents and siblings moved to Shelley in 1937. He graduated from Shelley High School in 1942.

He then moved to Kansas and worked at an ordinance plant before joining the U.S. Navy in 1943. He retired in 1945 at the end of World War II but stayed in the U.S. Navy Reserves until 1964.

While serving in the Reserves, he met and married Ima Pardue in California and served in Alaska and Seattle. While in Seattle, a beautiful baby girl, Diana Kay, joined their family. Ima passed away in 1976 from a heart attack.

He met and married Evelyn Weeda on April 8, 1978.

He worked as a claims adjuster for Allstate Insurance Company until 1986. He also drove a school bus for Valley Christian High School until 1994.

He enjoyed spending time with his siblings, which was the reason that he moved back to Idaho in about 2006.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Herndon of Idaho Falls; a daughter, Diana (Larry) Grumman of Buena Park, Calif.; sons, Harold (Amber) of Lakewood, Calif., and Raymond (Alisha) of Idaho Falls; and stepsons, John (Cheryl) De Koekkoek of Boise, James (Tammi) De Koekkoek of Idaho Falls, Timothy (Patti) De Koekkoek of Lakewood, Calif., and Steven De Koekkoek of Leota, Minn.

Harold is also survived by three brothers, Marvin (Jean) of Idaho Falls, Doyle (Ervetta) of West Valley, Utah, and Darrell (Diane) of Basalt; three sisters, LaVina (Roy, deceased) Williams of Idaho Falls, Mildred (Gary, deceased) Fletcher of Shelley and Carol (Tom) Mitchell of Ammon; sister-in-law, Dorothy (Alvin, deceased) Herndon; 15 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Alvin and Cloyd; and one sister, Ellen.

Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 16, at Gethsemane Baptist Church in Idaho Falls.

With love from your siblings: Marvin, Darrell, Doyle, LaVina, Mildred and Carol.
