Joel Marcos Herrera Obituary

Joel Marcos Herrera, 50, of Idaho Falls, passed away Friday, March 21, 2014, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center due to natural causes. Marcos had chosen cremation prior to his death.

Marcos was born Sept. 21, 1963, in Idaho Falls to Jose M. "Joe" Herrera and Audrey Lou Sathoff Herrera. He grew up, attended several schools in Jerome, Idaho, and furthered his education and graduated in Idaho Falls at Emerson Elementary, Bonneville Junior High and Bonneville High School. He also attended Idaho State University.

Marcos was the business owner and operator of the Karaoke Konnection for 18 years of his life. Previously, he was employed as a security guard at INEL for eight years, where he was noted as top marksman and an inspiration for strength training. During this time span, his back was broken in an accident that took place outside of work, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. In addition, he was employed as a disc jockey for KUPI radio station, hosting a late night talk music show for eight months.

As a child and teenager, Marcos lived and breathed sports, intensely focusing his total determination and energy in immersing himself into the heart of the high school football and basketball teams.

Golf was his passion and he emphatically enjoyed singing, bodybuilding, challenges at darts, and winning most poker games.

Marcos loved people. Other people's lives were his priority, sharing and genuinely embracing their circumstances. He wore his heart on his sleeve, continually manifesting deep regard for others, joyfully volunteering, dedicating his time freely, refusing payment for orchestrating and performing in countless charity fundraisers and benefits for those less fortunate. His door was always open and welcomed anybody and everybody.

He was an idol to many, giving encouragement and praise to his friends and family and being a protective brother, uncle and friend. His generosity was felt and well-known amongst his numerous nieces and nephews, ensuring that each of them received a Christmas gift from him each year.

He was a past member of the Eagles Lodge.

In addition, for 15 years consecutively he placed in the top 10 Idaho Falls Country Showdown singing contest held at the Shilo Inn. He also won the Congeniality Award for entering his Karaoke Konnection Float in the Fourth of July parade, entertaining throughout the entire route.

His determination, love, generosity, and contributions to society will be missed and always remembered.

Marcos is survived by three sisters, Michelle Herrera (Butch) Johnson of Idaho Falls, Denise (Dell) Taylor of West Jordan, Utah, and JoDee (Mike) DeWitt of Wendell, Idaho; two brothers, José M. (Linda) Herrera of Tetonia, Idaho, and André R. (April) Herrera of Idaho Falls; stepmother, Joanne Bloom Hill Herrera of Idaho Falls; two stepsisters, Kathy Hill of Idaho Falls and Debbie Hill (Steve Winston) Utterbeck of Idaho Falls; and stepbrother, Duane Jack (Terri) Hill of Idaho Falls.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at Wood Funeral Home, 273 N. Ridge Ave. The family will visit with friends for one hour prior to services. Shortly following the services, a "Celebration of Life" will be held at the Eagles Lodge, 635 Hemmert Drive in Idaho Falls.
