John Robert Swanson, 57, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2012, at Steele Memorial Hospital with his family by his side. He had fought a valiant battle against a malignant brain tumor.
John was born Nov. 9, 1955, in Idaho Falls to Richard James and Marie (Ray) Swanson. He was welcomed by an older brother, Dennis. They were later divorced.
Royce Curtis came into John's life when he married Marie. John was in elementary school at the time and Royce was very influential in his life. A little sister, Tonya, joined the family and he loved her with all of his heart to the very end.
John had very fond memories of coming to Salmon to his grandparents and he spent a lot of time on their ranch. Living in Salmon as a young man, he and his friends had many adventures. Their friendships remained strong and true throughout their lives.
Shortly after graduating high school, John joined the Navy, where he trained to be a machinist. He was very proud of the years he served his country. After his honorable discharge, he attended Tarrant County College in Fort Worth, Texas. He also traveled frequently to Salmon to spend time with his dad.
It was on one of those trips home that he met Katherine Dutton. They were soon joined in marriage. He became not only a husband but a father to two boys, Matthew and Marc. The family moved to Idaho Falls, where John found work. The little family was blessed with the arrival of a daughter, Kaitlyn, who John adored from the very first moment. One of his proudest moments was walking her down the aisle and giving her away in marriage. He was very proud of all his children.
John was a machinist by trade, but also a skilled mechanic and welder. He had a very analytical and creative mind and fabricated many products of his own design. He enjoyed the outdoors, camping and fishing with his family.
John always considered Salmon his home, so when his father, Richard, became ill, he returned to care for him. He also managed the ranch and opened a small tool and die business. John loved being "home" growing his garden, raising chickens, goats and being surrounded by friends and family.
John left this Earth way too soon and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Marie (Royce) Curtis; brother, Dennis; nephew, Rusty; sister, Tonya (David) Wright and family, all of Texas; his children, Kaitlyn (Chris) Stanger of Driggs, Matthew Godfrey and his son, Ethan, Marc (Kayla Binggeli) Dutton; and his ex-wife, Katherine Swanson, all of Idaho Falls; plus many aunts, uncles and cousins.
John was preceded in death by his father, Richard; sister, Holly; beloved grandparents; and numerous aunts and uncles.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, at Jones and Casey Funeral Home in Salmon, with Pastor Mike Palmer officiating. Burial will be in Salmon Cemetery with military honors.
