Leonard W. Longhurst Obituary

Leonard Wright Longhurst, 92, of Ogden, Utah, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012, in Orem, Utah.

He was born June 26, 1920, in Shelley to George Heber Jr. and Elizabeth Chadwick Longhurst.

He attended schools in Shelley, where he met and married Gwenaver Hall. They were married March 28, 1921, in the Logan, Utah, LDS Temple.

He served in the Air Force during World War II. He and Gwen lived in several cities during his enlistment.

They raised their four daughters in Shelley, Preston and Rexburg, Idaho, where he worked for Utah Power and Light Co. He retired in 1982 after a 38-year career. He received several prestigious honors, including the 1964 Executive International Distinguished Salesman Award, and ended his career as district accounting manager in the Rexburg office.

He served in many church callings, including ward clerk, MIA president, Sunday school president, scoutmaster, teacher development leader, High Priest secretary and many teaching positions.

Leonard was active in many civic duties, including the Kiwanis Club. He helped start the Kiwanis Club in both Shelley and Rexburg and was selected in 1962 as lieutenant governor. In 1965, he received the Golden Service Award from the Rexburg club. He was a member of the Rexburg Planning and Zoning Board.

He was a handyman and could fix almost anything. He always had a beautiful yard and garden. After his retirement in 1982, they spent many winters in Yuma, Ariz.

Leonard was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Harold and Chester; sisters, Electa, Lelia and Leatha; and one grandson.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Gwen; his daughters and their spouses, Jackie and Bill Cushing of Cheyenne, Wyo., Linda and Kent Wickham of Orem, Utah, Shelia Norman of Ogden, Utah, and Sue and Craig King of Nampa, Idaho; 16 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Canyon Hollows Ward, 1550 Rushton Ave. in Ogden, Utah. Friends may visit from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, at Myers Ogden Mortuary, 845 Washington Blvd., or from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Saturday at the church prior to the service.
