Lyle Helsley Obituary

Lyle Helsley, 80, of Mackay, Idaho, passed away Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014, at his home in Mackay from an extended illness.

Lyle was born Aug. 28, 1933, in Mountain Grove, Mo., to Elmer and Elvina (Anderson) Helsley. He moved to Idaho at the young age of 4 and attended school in Castleford, Idaho.

While growing up, Lyle was mechanically inclined and had the unique ability to make any engine run, even at a young age. At the age of 10, he was working at home teaching the Japanese in the internment camp from Minidoka to harvest sugar beets and repair farm equipment.

In 1952, he married the love of his life, Thelma June Uptain of Buhl, Idaho, in Elko, Nev. They established their home in various places throughout southern Idaho, including Buhl, Castleford, Shoshone, Rogerson, Twin Falls and Mackay. Lyle worked on many ranches, farms and service stations while he and Thelma were raising their six children.

He owned and operated the Chevron in Mackay before moving to Porterville, Calif., in 1979, where he owned and operated L & S Appliance Service.

Lyle is survived by his five daughters, Patricia (Don) Sweeney of Porterville, Calif., Elvina (Tim) Reimann of Mackay, Cindy (David) Kimball of Mackay, Brenda (Ted) Gemmell of Porterville, Calif., and Pamela (Samuel) Meeks of Porterville, Calif.; 18 grandchildren; and many great- and great-great-grandchildren.

Lyle was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma; his son, Michael; and two great-grandchildren, Daniel Steven Helsley and Nicole Dee Kimball.

Lyle's wishes were to be cremated and have no funeral service, therefore, his family will honor his wishes.
