Roy Edmund Rounds quietly crossed the veil Tuesday, April 29, 2014, surrounded by his loving wife and family. His family was his strength, his joy, his life. He was unfailingly honest in all his dealings. He spent a good deal of time using his equipment and his skills to help his neighbors, never allowing them to pay for his work. Serving others was never drudgery to him. It was the fabric of his life.
He taught his children to give a full day's work. He was always the example of working hard and long, because he knew that children will do more of what they see than what they hear. He accurately observed that doing nothing was the hardest job in the world because you could never stop to rest. He made the work fun for his children by bringing them treats and taking them fishing at the end of a hard day. On the fishing expeditions, he spent his time untangling lines and helping the younger children, smiling all the while.
He served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Western Canada Mission from 1939 to 1941. Throughout his life, he served actively in various church callings. Roy loved studying the gospel and would engage anyone in conversations that would increase his understanding.
In 1942, Roy joined the U.S. Navy, where he served on various battleships throughout World War II until he was discharged in 1946. During his service on the U.S.S. Frank, the ship was sunk during a fierce battle in the Pacific. Roy always held the captain of the ship in highest regard for his example of bravery as he went down with the ship.
He married Norma Sellers in the Idaho Falls Temple on Jan. 17, 1947. Together they raised 10 children: Larry (Karen) Rounds, Jolene (Ned) Hill, Gae (Ron) Frandsen, Sandy (Tom) Albaugh, Arlyn (Gayla) Rounds, Rodney (Kathie) Rounds, Peggy (Douglas) Hanks, Blayne (Carolyn) Rounds, Judy (Kirk) Polatis and Norene (Todd) Ballard. They have 70 grandchildren and 118 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ambrose and Margaret Rounds; a sister, Eddis Jensen; and a son, Arlyn Rounds.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 3, in the Garfield First Ward, 71 N. 3700 East in Rigby, under the direction of Eckersell Memorial Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the LDS Church Missionary Fund.
Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.eckersellfuneralhome.com. Goodbye for now, Silver-Haired Daddy.
