Wayne A. Whitten Obituary

Wayne A. Whitten, 91, of Blackfoot, passed away Sunday, March 2, 2014, at the Idaho Veterans Home in Pocatello.

Wayne was born Feb. 26, 1923, in Blackfoot to Albert William and Florence Leona Cones Whitten. He was a lifelong resident of Blackfoot. He attended school in the Blackfoot school district and graduated from Blackfoot High School.

In 1943, Wayne joined the Army. He was trained as a radar technician and was stationed in Japan during WWII.

Wayne married Thelma Coles in Las Vegas in 1964.

Wayne worked as the manager of OK Food Center in Blackfoot. He left the grocery business to co-own and operate A&L Farms and Trucking. He later took a job with the city of Blackfoot, where he worked for the sanitary and street departments until his retirement in 1993.

He loved watching and coaching sports of all kinds. He was the coach for the Blackfoot Spuds baseball team for a number of years.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Thelma of Blackfoot; two sons, Lance of Blackfoot and Mike of Bountiful, Utah; a daughter, Jackie Whitten of Pocatello; a brother, Fred (Marlene) Whitten of Mesa, Ariz.; a sister, JoAnn (Lamar) Palmer of Clinton, Tenn.; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son; brothers, Bill, Bob and Lee; and sisters, Luetta, LaRaine and Jean.

According to Wayne's wishes, cremation services have been performed. A graveside memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 8, at Grove City Cemetery, where the Elks Lodge BPOE 1416 will present its tribute of affection and members of the American Legion Stewart Hoover Post will present final military rites. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Hawker Funeral Home of Blackfoot.
