George Leon White, 85, of Shelley, passed away Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014. He left with his sweetheart by his side, but he is now in heaven with his little girl.
He was born in Shelley on June 9, 1928, to Earl George and Effie Russell White. He was one of 12 children. He was raised in Shelley and attended school there. At the age of 17, he joined the Navy and served our country for two years.
He met Elizabeth Anne Ricker in 1948, and they married Oct. 29, 1948. The following year, they began their family. Cynthia Anne White was the first of six children. Soon to follow were Linda Lou, Gaylan Leon, Rodney Dee, Ina Sue and Lita Jo "Jody." He owned his own service station, known as the City Service Center. He was lucky enough to work with a son and son-in-law for many of those years. After selling his business, he worked for the city of Shelley until he later retired at the age of 59.
After retirement, he enjoyed traveling with his wife and they enjoyed many winters in Blythe, Calif., where he met and made many friends, as he always had the knack of doing.
He loved many things in life, but family was his number one priority. He loved their mine in Challis, Idaho. He enjoyed horseshoes, eating ice cream and popcorn, giving whisker burns to his grandchildren and taking walks holding his sweetheart's hand.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Anne White of Shelley; his siblings, Vyonne Humes of St. George, Utah, LuJuanna Carney of Idaho Falls, Jeanette (Delar) Lords of Idaho Falls, Earl Jr. (Polly) White of Menan, Marilyn Lafrance of Oregon, Dorothy Bischoff of Shelley and Deona (John) Gonzales of Idaho Falls; five children, Cynthia (Ric) Rivers of Irwin, Idaho, Linda (Ed) Powell of Palmer, Alaska, Gaylan (Suzanne) White of Shelley, Rodney (Echo) White of Shelley and Ina (Mike) Mulberry of Idaho Falls; son-in-law, Duke Arave of Shelley; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Mary Russell and George and Eliza White; parents, Earl and Effie White; his brothers, Raymond White and Ronald White; his sisters, Iola Lorraine White and Vera Lille; and his daughter, Lita Jo "Jody" Arave.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, at Shelley Hillcrest Cemetery, with Pastor Mike Eld officiating. Military rites will be performed by the David B. Bleak Post 93 of Shelley assisted by the Idaho Honor Guard. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Nalder Funeral Home in Shelley.
